I think it was Henry Tudor who bleated. Richard III was already dead by that point (although re-appearing as a ghost).

Don't worry David, by around mid-November we'll know exactly how many sheep Winston has...

  • David Slack,

Sounds like John Key won't be in the flock.
    (Can't be flocked?)

That was exuberantly unequivocal of him just now with Mary Wilson.

  • Russell Brown,

Totally. I paused in the act of putting out the recycling to hear the end.

She did well in asking a question that required an unequivocal answer, it must be said.

  • simon g,

This just in: Tariana Turia dances jig.

Ruling out is fun. Sticking to it is the hard part. It's worth noting that John Key has gone rather quiet about Roger Douglas, who he ruled out even more emphatically. So that's two down already. Who's left? Presumably Hone Harawira could now publicly fart on the flag if he felt so inclined, there's no way Key is going for the "ruled out" trifecta.

It's kind of touching that anyone still believes in the notion of "ruling out". Some previous unequivocal statements from the last election campaign: the Maori Party wouldn't go with Don Brash (but did) and of course Winston wouldn't go with anyone. Well, as long as they say so ...

As Dubya's Dad said: Read. My. Lips. He may even have held up a "No" sign.

I still wait for one of his followers to create a

"Leave Winston alone" clip on youtube.

"the Maori Party wouldn't go with Don Brash (but did)"

The last 3 years of Maori Party- National Government have been better than I expected.

Democracymum posted this interesting find at Kiwiblog:

Why did Winston say on One News tonight that he was not at the 2006 Karaka Yearling Sales (and therefore could not have met with Owen Glenn) when this photo clearly puts him there?

  • simon g,

No, they didn't make it to government. But Tariana Turia made it as far as sitting down with Don Brash and drafting the famous (or perhaps forgotten?) letter, in direct contradiction of her pre-election promise.

Getty Images? Who'd expect a fly-by-night outfit like that to now exactly when and where one of its photos was taken?

Seriously, I think that's going to go down as a Blog Epic Win.

    Wise, you are.

    See:

National leader John Key has ruled out Sir Roger Douglas receiving a Cabinet post in any government led by him.

    And, last week:

Hide keen for Douglas to make Cabinet comeback

Sure is a nice catch and a credit to David! Not exactly obscure though, being the first Google Images result for Winston Peters Karaka 2006

Well, since the accompanying blurb describes him as the New Zealand immigration minister, I wouldn't necessarily put too much faith in it.

  • Craig Ranapia,

And I hope Don and Tariana used condoms, but back in this universe... (Just as a small style note, if we're going to game coalitions without waiting for that tiresome actual election, could we avoid the coital metaphors such as "getting into bed with", "hooking up" or "going with". I find Duncan Garner vile enough at the best of times. Listening to the fatuous boob play 'Pimp Ma Parliament' is just too much.)

    And, last week:

I'm kind of keen for Rodney's secretary to "accidentally" set fire to that fucking vile jacket, but I doubt that's going to happen either. One might also suggest that ACT should at least be consistently out-polling the margin of error before calling dibs on any Cabinet post, let alone Finance.

I don't think the picture of Peters at the Karaka sales is a winner.

Dammit, you may well be right. The TVNZ story says Peters "denied" being at Karaka in 2006, but there appears to be no actual statement from him saying that, just that he didn't meet Glenn there that year, but in 2007. Guyon may have got ahead of himself.

Not to be an utter bore here, but is anyone looking forward to further insights into Brian Henry's accounting, record keeping and lobbying techniques? They've been fascinating so far. As for the rest of Owen Glenn's letter, I can't really what conceivable motivation or benefit he'd gain from lying.

The Herald's vox pops suggest that's a widely held view.

It was almost touching to hear the emails from the Peters faithful on Morning Report today.

It's a real pain if it means the ETS legislation can't be passed, but I can't see this can go on much longer. The ideal scenario for Clark is Peters stepping down "while the matter is resolved" (only an optimist would really expect a resignation), but that depends on a sense of propriety I fear just isn't there.

And Dail Jones proves, if proof is needed, that Winston First draws its caucus from the shallow and stagnant end of the gene pool.

The NZ First MP on the committee, Dail Jones, questioned the authenticity of the letter because it was not signed and he questioned Mr Glenn's credibility.

In Parliament he said the evidence so far was on the basis of "an unsigned letter from Mr Glenn, a signed letter from Mr Peters, an actual physical appearance by Brian Henry barrister at law in New Zealand and a physical appearance before that committee of the Rt Hon Winston Peters."

And how do you sign your e-mails, Mr Jones -- crayon or coloured pencil?
