  • Dave Patrick,

Also the Bill and Ben party could have been the 10,000 votes in central Auckland that Judith was missing. How do we find out where those votes came from?

The Electoral Commission website has a breakdown by booth for every electorate in the country - makes for an easy way to waste a LOT of time, looking at votes and patterns booth by booth.

  • David Slack,

At our booth at Stanley Bay school, two people voted Maori Party last time, and one this time. I have my hunches, but I'm not saying more. It does rather show you the relative lack of anonymity that can pertain to the niche voter.

Hey, here's a thought, though: I was right on the money about the Libertarianz vote.

    Very true. They'll be gutted.

It appears that the Maori Party may get a minister-outside-Cabinet post too ...

That would be a great development. Puts in perspective the bullet we dodged when Brash lost the last election, no?

  • Simon C,

B&B didn't put up any electorate candidates, so didn't take electorate votes from anyone.

There were 81 party votes for B&B in Auckland Central.

  • Dave Patrick,

You beat me to it, Simon - Bill and Ben seemed particularly popular in the City booths, in Grey Lynn and on Waiheke Island. They got no votes on Great Barrier

  • Paul Campbell,

I was wondering about specials too - especially with this rush to enthrone a govt - shouldn't we wait until they're counted?- I wonder what happens if it turns out that something really does change because of them? (ooh look all the people in rest homes voted for Winnie, and here are the student's votes: Labour and the Greens got few more seats too) does someone at Elections NZ have a quiet word in the GG's ear suggesting he wait for the finals

John Key, if appointed as PM in the interim, would continue in a caretaker capacity, while negotiations between the parties worked out who would have suffiecient support to be PM. If Key then got the numbers, he would cease acting in a caretaker capacity; if Goff(?) did, he'd be appointed and take over.

Maybe TV3 coverage isn't good out at Great Barrier, so they don't get them?

Ahhhhhh, what? His comment that "ACT is in Govt and it's therefore totally different) is just absurd, given the coverage from the media so far is along the lines of Key running a minority Govt, EXACTLY like Labour was, e.g.
In a surprise move, Mr Key signalled his preference for an arrangement allowing his minor party allies to hold ministerial positions while remaining outside government - mirroring the unconventional deal done by Helen Clark and Winston Peters in 2005, which National roundly criticised.

The shifts from attackers of the Govt to defenders of the Govt (and vice versa for others) is extraordinary to watch being played out...

  • simon g,

I'm waiting for the Herald to describe Key's impending trip to APEC as a "taxpayer-funded South American junket".

And why does he want to go? Hasn't he seen the leaders' annual fancy dress photos? Honeymoon ends, right there.

It's only the Indonesian events that are a real must-avoid - batik shirts that even Richard Prebble wouldn't be seen dead in.

There was that story, as you quote, but I believe most of the stories have been referencing minister outside cabinet, which I anticipate is the accurate statement of affairs. It doesn't differ from the arrangement over the last three years, but it does differ from how that was initially described (largely required by Winston's promise not to go into government with either National or Labour). After a week or two (maybe a little longer) everyone admitted that he was in the Government and life went on.

But he will be seen (as the winner) and his entire campaign was about him.

It's Peru. It's gotta be a poncho, with John's little head popping out at the top.

I still have nightmares about Helen's Vietnam get-up (and she probably does too).

Quite. It looks like DPF is going to provide many such entertaining rationalisations in the three years to come.

Que? Did Clark ever stop referring to herself as running a "minority government"? And that seems to be how all the gallery commentators are referring to Key's new arrangement too.

I'm not registered at Kiwiblog and can't be bothered. (What urbane leftist would?) If anyone happens to be over there they might like to ask David what, then, John Key is declaring himself to have been "wrong" about?

everyone admitted that he was in the Government and life went on.

Remember the China Free Trade Deal?

It was a nonsense - and widely criticised as such - that the Foreign Minister opposed the government on an issue linked to his own job.

Key hints that Rodney Hide will get an economics/finance portfolio. Will he then support all the government's policies relating to that area?

Also - unrelated but intriguing: if Goff becomes Labour leader today, is he Prime Minister?
