  • Paul Williams,

Ack, now I've wasted a good hour chuckling at Keating quotes... how's this for size:

    He's a pre-Copernican obscurantist.

About former head of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Peter Hendy - the comment was made just after the Coalition bought in Workchoices, comparable to NZ ECA in 1991. In this article, which contains the above quote, Keating also observes that Hendy's a Liberal stooge... unsurprisingly, after Labor won the federal election, Hendy quit ACCI and is now Chief of Staff to Brendan Nelson

My favourite political rhetoric of recent years: Mark Latham's likening of Howard's government to "a conga line of suckholes."

And after reading (OK, browsing through) Latham's poisonous__Diaries__, perhaps we should be thankful that we never got a chance to see what Prime Minister Latham would have done to the "suckholes" in his own caucus he obviously regarded with total contempt.

Totally agree. Latho was nuts, probably still is.

  • Angus Robertson,

If Labour are wondering how to compound their restoration in the polls, they could do worse than consider putting some real spine and spirit and imagery in their language.

As long as they do not make a habit of lunching at Iguana's that is.

  • Sue,

Can we get a hypnotist for this year's PA/Wgtista party? I suspect they could get you to do some really funny things...

I would so come up for that.

then i think we must make it so

With one good medical term you can step in and put the paddles to the most lifeless of sentences. How strange, then, that our political discourse is so vapid; so devoid of the doctors' vivid words.

An academic in my department is doing - well done really - on the influence of medical language on politics - medieval period mostly. He would strongly disagree that our political discourse is devoid on doctor's words, not sure about the more vivid ones.

See Dr Shogimen's two articles on the topic:

    # 'Treating the Body Politic: Medical Metaphor of Political Rule in Late Medieval Europe and Tokugawa Japan', The Review of Politics 70 (2008), pp. 77-104
    # ‘Medicine and the Body Politic in Marsilius of Padua’ s Defensor pacis’ in A Companion to Marsilius of Padua, eds. Cary J. Nederman and Gerson Moreno-Riaño (Leiden: Brill, forthcoming, might be out by now...).

The past is another country. I was thinking of NZ, this election. However, perhaps the same holds here and now, and I haven't registered its extent.

Oh, well, perhaps we should be thankful that the David here is Slack not Lynch. Who cheerfully admits a friend who, after having a a hysterectomy, thought he'd like her uterus in a bottle. I'd really love to see the Police report and insurance claim if Lynch's house ever got burgled. But no pictures, please...

  • dc_red,

Muldoon's "It doethn't leath my opponenths muth time, doeth it?" was memorable less for its rhetorical power than the manner in which it was pronounced.

Lange was the best though (and unlike any of the current mob, occasionally spoke his mind about the idiocy of the United States). But my two favourites were:

"He's gone around the country stirring up apathy." (about Bolger)

"I've changed my mind!" (responding to Palmer's effusive praise upon Lange's resignation as PM).

I think you can make a fairly strong argument for the past influencing the present. "Body politic" etc.

Old, more like. I'm grossed out quite enough by the extraneous bits of my own body. Let alone ending up with a most inappropriate appetite for dumplings -- don't ask.

Then again none of us are having a bad a day as this guy:

And if you think that's freaky, the Los Angeles Opera has just opened the US première of Howard's Shore's opera -- directed by Cronenberg, and conducted by Placido Domingo.

  • giovanni tiso,

Actual sebaceous cysts, on the other hand, look exactly like chickpeas. It's uncanny. I didn't get to keep mine - there were enough to make a reasonable amount of hummus - but I did take a picture of the top of my head with the stitches and I used it for a couple of weeks to scare my friends.

You're all lucky (Russell especially) that I don't know how to post pictures. (I expect you can't, which is wise).

    Different spelling - no 'h'.
If it were a lymphoma, I wouldn't be breezily posting medi-porn.

Dimension? About the size of a flattened strawberry.

  • Paul Campbell,

yeah looking at the soy sauce in there - my thoughts too were "mmmm sashimi" - there go my hopes for running for higher office .....

Many many years ago I lived in a little hippy conclave north of Dunedin - one of our neighbours worked in the pathology dept of the med school and was wont to bring home things in jars to show off .... eventually he sold his house and a nice family of german draft-dodgers moved in .... with teutonic efficiency they started to clean the place up .... one weekend a rumour shot around the community .... "the police had been called, they were pulling the weeds out the back and found an arm" .... everyone thought back to those jars they'd heard about .... the truth spreads much more slowly than salacious gossip - what they'd actually found was a plastic skeleton of an arm covered with a perished surgical glove

needless to say it's probably not a good idea to get a reputation for having body parts in bottles ....
