  • Sofie Bribiesca,

I'd suggest after yesterdays announcement ,mums and dads will be thankful Bryers moved to Australia to continue his business in the manner he is used to. It is diabolical that his fine reflected his only (yeah right) small income, (consulting in the renamed company doing exactly the same thing). Yes, about reassuring as being kicked in the privates.
This constant wet bus ticket treatment for all these companies are probably the same companies that "needed" the lowered tax rate to stop the LAQC's, and the abuse of the tax system. Why not reward those that abused the system, because then they will behave better. It's a joke that is insulting to my intelligence.

I think that it's dicks, rather, who are running the world.

The fat exists. It's just that they are, for some reason, choosing to look in the wrong places.

    Oh yes.

But even if it were cut out, it's a rounding error in the scheme of things...

  • slarty,

I didn't think there was GST on wages??

    Precisely.

An extra dose of hyperbole anyone?

They may be referring to remibursement for expenses. Which may indicate these are being used as wages. Which might be evasion or fraud. So someone should probably discretely suggest they STFU.

Because not all charities are the shining light of probity... even in the interests of doing the right thing...

Mileage is GST-exempt too. So I'm doubly unsure what they're on about to be honest.

By the way, we still give very little in international aid by world standards, but that doesn't come into any sort of equation, does it? I mean we're quite comfortable with our meanness.

This is coming to resemble more and more the New Zealand that I first experienced in 1997. Cold fucking place, on an institutional level. Not the people, fortunately, but the mood was pretty dire.

I wanted to ask something actually, to everyone and nobody in particular: Around the start of the last decade did it actually seem like there was a lot of hope that NZ would become a fair and just, environmentally friendly, culturally assured place?

I was feeling a little nostalgic the other day, for a time before it seemed like Labour was leading us nowhere and the only alternative was worse. But I'm not sure if that place ever existed outside my head.

Earth to National party! Earth to National Party! People love their family and friends! People aren't selfish pricks!

I believe it's the people who voted for them and continue to lend their support in polls who you need to be talking with - especially to understand what the appeal is.

Well it was outside my head, I thought. I never tired of Labour. I did accept that some things they began to do could have been dealt with differently, but fundamentally their intentions were good. I no longer felt the great divide of previous years and knew that would slowly erode when National got in.It was in the air prior to the Election.I think I was more sad then than now. Now it just feels like selfish is the new black. Money, me, money, me.

I think that you are right, and I had a similar feeling, after all it is not often that a Govt is elected on the promise to raise taxes. There were of cause various business people moaning simply because their tribe didn't get elected.

  • Mike Graham,

The whole focus on the budget TV news tonight was about the net tax amount various types of earners would get. No analysis on the other implications of the budget i.e. the various re-distributions of funding, which in some cases will have a wider impact than an increase in the GST rate.

  • Stephen Judd,

Dunno about you lot but I am off to a political shindig all day tomorrow, having become a Labour party member for the first time in years recently. There's plenty of time between now and the next election for people to figure out what's going on if we communicate it the right way.

Don't forget that right-wing parties are funded by people with deep pockets, and can afford to spend a great deal on research and communications professionals. They don't need members, just donors. Left-wing parties need volunteers and members.

Returning to George's question, I think a lot of us lost steam and enthusiasm in the mid-00s as it became clear that slow tinkering was what we were going to get. I don't really believe that people in general are more selfish now, or less compassionate. I just don't think they're exposed to a clearly articulated vision of a real social democratic New Zealand in recent times.

I hope some of the emotion I read in this thread is translated into action. Join! Organise! Lobby! Campaign! GET SHIT DONE.
