  • Russell Brown,

    Ken Ring jumps in:

No one has mentioned the moon. No coincidence that last night the moon changed phase and hit the lastQ mark bang on 9.54pm which was about the earthquake time, and within a week on Tuesday it will be not only closest moon, not only the same day as new moon, but also same day as a total solar eclipse, and highest tides for the month. Big earthquakes usually happen around new moons and full moons, and a week either side. So over the next week we can expect more big earthquakes around the globe, and seeing the eclipse path is over India and China, with S Japan, Hawaii, Mexico on roughly the same latitude, probably a big shake in India, China or somewhere else in Asia. • Steve Barnes,

    A 17-centimetre tsunami?

Yes, it has to do with the depth of the water. If it was 17cm in 200 mtrs of water then when it reached the shore it would be 200 X 0.17 which would be 34mtrs. About 100 feet.

  • Steve Barnes,

    p.s.
As the water around that part of the coast is exceptionally deep for a coastline then the tsunami would just remain small.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

And the TradeMe forums as well, Giovanni. That's amber alert, isn't it?

The Trade Me forums are the first place I go to check if the vague rumbling I felt was indeed an earthquake.

Last night there were heaps of discussions underway, many of them verging on hysteria. I mean, what does a discussion topic called "TSUNAMI!!!!!!!!!" suggest?

There also seemed to be an idea that the tsunami report issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii somehow meant that a tsunami was going to hit Hawaii.

And then there was anger that "the media" were leading us astray by their "misleading" news reports.

  • Steve Barnes,

    From Stuff

A predicted tsunami hit Bluff about 10.30pm last night following the earthquake which struck Southland, but its height - 17cm - meant it was tiny.

The confirmation of the Bluff tsunami's size led to the wider warnings being cancelled soon after.

    Ah, but a pendant can.

I think you'll find that the "usually" should actually be "always".

    Cheers,

Robyn, one of the advisory reports was actually for Hawaii itself. Since earthquake/tsunami effects are mostly guesswork worst case scenario would be first response.

Tsehai Tiffen had a great story on One News with some of the people who were in the fjords during the earthquake. Beautiful pictures, wonderful characters.

  • Islander,

I live in South Westland but happen to be in my other home area, Otago.

9.23...slight rolling motion. Lightbulb swayed & chiffonere creaked. Said to my Mum, "Earthquake." She was deep in reading trance-"Mmm?"
    "Lookit the light."

Went to Geonet - which didnt respond. Just after 10p. it came up with a 6.1 round Tuatapere.

We went off to bed happy.

In the morning, I found the international tsunami warning/NZ (which arrived on my computer at 10.15 - courtesy a seismologist mate, I get these things as soon as the gummint does.)

I also learned that the initial quake was a 7.8 - and in Fiordland. Waua! Was Big O buzzing! (No reports of any major damage at home.)

A truly wonderful co-incidence: 2 of my friends are sedimentologists, and their speciality is palaeotsunamis - and they were/are in Big O with several of their graduate students! Able to reassure locals that the rolling kind of quake doesnt generate tsunamis and all should be OK (thanks to our fibre optic connection, they were also online for a minutebyminute display of what was going on-)

I'll still be interested in finding out what's happened in my home-

Are those lyrics the creepiest ever penned, or what? 'Sometimes I want to break you, want to bring you to your knees'. Um, OK. That's very tender and romantic.
