Why are road accidents are news - especially lead-story news?

  • Craig Young,

Looks nice in the undies, though. Any chance of him getting out of them? Ahem. Be that as it may, doesn't the whole scenario for this production remind one of the classic Patrick MacGoohan series The Prisoner (1968)?

  • Craig Young,

I also suggest that we bombard Prime and or the listings magazines with questions about when the network in question intends to screen BH, for that matter.

  • Grant McDougall,

This Is Not My Life looks like it could be a good show, but it annoys the hell out of my that TVNZ have scheduled it to screen at the same time as Prime's Survivors , which is also a "what's happened to me and my world ?" type of programme.
Going from the ads for them, they both look interesting. Oh well, that's market competition for you, I suppose... *sigh*

If he ends up joining Grant Bowler on True Blood, I'd say it's a dead certainty. :)

Fire up the PVR and pray for a wet weekend. I've seen the first three episodes of Survivors, and while it's uneven (to put it mildly) it's still a shame it got cancelled on one hell of a cliff-hanger. (IIRC, the ratings were respectable but not good enough when the Beeb is looking to cut a hell of a lot of money across the board.)

The story I did about TINML is here

Bloody good story it was too, but is "slightly futuristic" supposed to be don't-frighten-the-horses code for "science fiction that you can watch even if you're not a sad fat 40 year-old virgin"?

  • Craig Ranapia,

And dear Prime: Are you planning to show the rest of Ashes to Ashes any time soon, or at least before I break and buy the DVDs. As River Song would say, "no spoilers, sweetie" but the series finale was four times as good as the end of Lost at less than half the length and a fraction of the hype.

That's right, I remember you "previewing" that finale

I gave up on our TV news when they interrupted Barack Obama's victory speech for a live cross to some New Zealander standing outside the White House clumsily attempting to summarize the situation.

  • Kyle Matthews,

I gave up on Friday Night Lights on NZ tv. They showed series 1 at 11pm or something, but I think they showed series 2 at... 1am or something? Not even close to funny. FFS.

I downloaded all four series once Patrick Kane scored the Stanley Cup winning goal for Chicago and my bandwidth got freed up again, watched them over the last month. Really good. I thought season 4 might drop off with the major change looking a bit desperate, but it gets a bit season 1 of the wire and touched on wider social issues and crime and race. Good, way better than the 2004 movie which looks half as long as it should have been in comparison.

Also put me onto a musician called Sufjan Stevens. His album Illinoise is fantastic.

Does anyone know if we're going to be getting Treme?

  • Pete Sime,

I really hope they have a story arc in mind. The best shows in the genre over the past decade have got over the idea of being episodic and have the whole story scoped out (ok, BSG and Lost are both criticised for weak endings, but you get my point).

I recall cataloguing a few of his CDs - including that one - when I worked at Dunedin Public Library and I was quite impressed by him. A couple of other bands I think you'd enjoy if you like Stevens are Beirut and Band of Horses.

  • Lucy Stewart,

Chuck is probably worth catching up on, and while I don't watch Supernatural a friend who does tells me that the second half of season 4 is pretty good (and she was extremely disillusioned with season 3 to the point of giving up on it, so.)

I've just taken up Castle as a replacement for the crime/comedy slot Bones used to fill before their character decisions made the annoyance factor outweigh the enjoyment. Early days yet, but it seems promising, and they're managing so far to avoid the annoying professionalism-is-because-you're-too-uptight line I was worried they'd take after the first episode.

Funnily enough, I find myself missing episodic sci-fi; there is something to be said for not having to catch every single episode to watch a show. There's a balance; the show I can think of that struck it best was season three of Buffy, which had an excellent overall story arc but kept each episode largely self-contained plot-wise until right near the end of the season.

  • Craig Ranapia,

@Lucy: Oh, I'm enjoying Castle too -- and for much the same reason I was quite surprised to get hooked on The Good Wife despite not being a huge fan of legal soapers. Neither show is startlingly innovative, but they're both well-cast and the writing and production are a damn sight more engaging than they strictly need to be. (And, no, Kate Beckett isn't "uptight". Castle is really really annoying, and takes an almost sadistic glee in winding her up at every opportunity.)

I thought this season of Doctor Who saw Moffat work in the 'arc' more subtly than RTD (not that I want to get into some tedious "RTD rules, Moff drools" fan-boy argument) and, unusually for Nu Who, closed us out on one hell of a cliff-hanger. The Silence -- someone or something that could hijack the Tardis, make it explode and incidentally destroy all creation (again) -- is still out there. And so are The Doctor, Amy and "Mister Pond". :)

shows that we’re really behind on: Friday Night Lights...

I've been meaning to watch that... I suppose I should?

It's one of the shows that Region 4 gets squelched on with DVD special features - and I imagine deleted scenes can be pretty good for a show like I understand this to be - so I have a nice Region 1 set just sitting on my bookshelf.

I should just get on my butt and watch it then?

And the Classic TV History Blog has this, which y'all should read.

*sigh* That was depressing -- and I think Stephen Bowie enitrely missed the point of that abortion plot line on Friday Night Lights which I found rather refreshing because it was about a human being not a straw womb who only exists for "advocacy".

And I'm pretty sure the out-atheist Ron Moore would love to know what "surreptitious" Christian dogma he was pushing in Battlestar Galactica -- unless you really think he's putting the case that genocide is OK, as long as you really believe it's The One True God's will? If anything, BSG and Caprica are downright brutal about how nothing good comes from mashing up faith and politics.

I assume that's short for "preview" or whatever it's called ? I would if I actually had it and seeing as I don't that's precisely why I was complaining about the scheduling.

  • Emma Hart,

Yeah, we're really enjoying Castle as a family. We've nearly finished season 2 and they're not yet crippled by their Moonlighting problem. It's not, as Craig said, hugely original, nor are the plots particularly fiendish, it's just really entertaining and funny and well put-together.

Also, I have just ordered my daughter a copy of Heat Wave. ABC wrote and released the book. It was a NYT Best Seller.

A digital video recorder -- or, in our case, one of those set top Freeview boxes that replaced the VCR with no regret. (A hard drive that can record up to a hundred hours vs. a poxy three hour tape I constantly forget to swap out? No contest.) You're right though, it is a pain in the arse when networks are determined to counter-schedule their only interesting shows against each other. But I note that Prime does "encore" screenings of shows like Doctor Who and Stargate: Universe which you can play catch-up with.

It was on after a *fishing show*, which our MySky always caught the last few minutes of. FFS, indeed. I suppose I'll have to ring up a kindly aunt in America and get her to send me a VCR from now on. I need my Landry fix!

Make sure you catch up on "Better off Ted" a really fantastic show that has some fantastic commedic patter going at times (canceled after the 2nd season) and "Community" which is a lot more funny than I expected.

ITA about 'Community', but I'd also like to know if anyone is planning to screen 'Parks and Recreation' -- which did the best return from the dead since Lazarus.

Ah, Supernatural - even when it's bad, it's very very good. Hot Dean and Cute Dean. Awesome.

Anyone know if we're going to get Community and Parks and Recreation? I'm dying to see those.

  • Ngaire BookieMonster,

And to the original post - yes to the criticism of the news - it's appalling on both channels, to the point where if I can I'm either going to start watching Prime at 5.30 (at least it's only 1/2 hour) or just leaving it to the internet.

I'm sick of promotions masquerading as "news" - lifestyle and puff pieces are fine to relieve the doom but not when they're just constant ads for a channel's programs. And the pointless "live crosses" - my particular favourites are the live crosses to Reporter Blahblah in our Auckland studio - in other words that room down the corridor. A live cross does not add any credibility to your story when there's nothing happening live.

Actually, I think I'll just follow the newsreaders' and reporters' Twitter feeds instead.
