Actually, I get kind of pissy when people ascribe arguments and positions to me that are not borne out by the evidence. Keep that in mind and we'll be fine.

It seems to be something that you've happily repeated with others here, which is pretty much why I opted out of this thread.

Actually Mark Harris- the more tourist dollars have come into South Westland - the HIGHER our rates have become! For the simple reason, that there was little infrastructure developed to cope with increased tourism onflow (literal in the case of toilets. And rubbish) so both District and Regional councils have upped their take off residents hugely.
There has been *very* little evidence of value for ratepayers in Big O
-and none at all from a WCRegional Council perspective - so your argument holds neither water or stinkier material. -

Gio, I can't think of any mechanism for measuring the impact of, let alone compensating, any individual for benefiting society that isn't a form of welfare benefit apportioned on some incredibly arcane scale and requires a substantial number of bureaucrats to run.

Rob I still can't see an answer to the question of what you have given up to gain the protection of copyright (in contract terms this is called "consideration"....and must be present in ALL valid contracts). Please just type a succinct response, no links, no referral, no changing the subject.
Re the wheelchairs question. I don't begrudge the disabled (be they physically or intellectually disabled) assistance so they can participate in life in a way that every able-bodied (able-minded?) person can. Should I begrudge assistance for the able-bodied/able-minded who has intentionally & deliberately contributed to the development of their own disability?.....Perhaps, but I'd guess they've got enough crap in their lives and don't need me adding to it.
Now that you have that little gem of information, may I enquire what the relevance is?

Mark, I would appreciate an undertaking to assume the good faith of others in this debate.
It's kinda funny that we become most exercised over an issue that's a mystery to most people, but we should treat each others' arguments with respect.

I've just read the other thread and can I say how impressed I was by its constructive tone - much like the discussion at Foo. Notable that Rick, Rochelle and Graeme feel comfortable contributing there.

Russell, I'd rather you didn't merge the copyright threads if they were to become uniformly like this one has been during its tortured history. Applying stricter moderation/consequences to copyright topics might help - and I expect that to apply equally to me as well.
Maybe we could start a thread that is not relitigating the issues but is only about the solution, the new approach that Giovanni has raised recently and which others like you and me touched on in earlier threads?

A permanent copyright thread wouldn't be a bad idea. Perhaps you could attach to it a thermometer-like app that tells you at a glance whether or not the tempers are currently flaring.

what doesn't help you is his calm reading of the situation in the preferred climate of hysteria.
perhaps a better way to challenge my comment was to say something along the lines of, hmmm, "I think the discussion has been quite reasonable", not "fucking bullshit just stop it", which might come across as bullyish, I thought it did. not leading by example it seems.
Graeme's comment were clearly met with less than welcoming arms, that's what I'm saying. I didn't say anyone was rude to him.
I used the word flak as opposed to getting shit, arseholes or any other more aggressive descriptions.The thing I've liked very much about Graeme's comments prior to today's is their calm, reasoned and informed approached. You've liked that when it suited your position but now that he's contradicting the popular 'sky is falling' line he's 'seeing things his way'.

I still think you haven't given-up anything for the right of protection for IP.
You were already a member of society.

patents and trademarks are protection for ideas,
th copyright protection I seek relates to identifiable masters, ie softcell's version of tainted love. I've already stated that above. -

I'm not going to engage you on any of this but I can hardly make allowances for someone who is completely anonymous and does nothing to reveal who they are.

At one MED 'workshop' I attended someone from the retail association claimed they had 13 cases of TM infringement fully documented and ready to prosecute. Their problem was not that the law was wrong but no-one in Government cared enough to take up the prosecutions.
And that was essentially Rochelle's point on the other thread. Rather than addressing the above issue the Government is side stepping it and creating a kangaroo court instead. Not a great precedent.

And (but coming a distant second), dear "robbery", you're not really complaining about somebody else hiding behind a pseudonym are you? You were outed a while ago in a cryptic manner so there might be people in the know who have figured out who you are, but just about half of PAS has seen Sacha in the flesh this past weekend.

Well, I know Mark, although don't usually try to speak for him. He does come across here in a forthright manner but he too is concerned about the rights of Copyright holders, balanced by an equal concern for Copyright 'consumers'.
