    Bogan? You decide:

On my top ten favourite songs is this - Eddie Cochran’s Somethin’ Else note the gorgeous moment when he out Elvis’s Elvis at 1:31-1:33. Was there ever a better song about cars and girls?

I did a lot of growing up in a car town where they made Marinas, Maxis and errrm Princesses, I rebuilt one of my own ragtop Triumph in later years. But the car that needs to carry my ashes is one of these. The Vauxhall Viscount 3.3 Straight six, 3 speed GM transmission, electric windows, leather seats, walnut dash, just don’t go round any corners at speed. The old man had a very interesting taste in cars, our model was a ’72 just don’t ask the cost of the spares.

    Long hair? Check

    Leather jackets? Check

I still have the above in my wardrobe……

    As for music

There was of course Black Sabbath from Birmingham - where they also built cars.

Ownership of Deep Purple’s Made in Japan was obligatory, containing one Highway Star.

Forgotten upstarts? That would be Saxon and their wheels of steel.

Whatever we were it wasn’t f***ing Chavs - they had yet to be born and Burberry had yet to sell out as a fashion brand.

Just to remind readers how bogans are cool with queer rockers too.

So as to the title, “Should Labour go after the Bogan Vote?” I'd suggest yes, yes they should and while I'm at it, they should go after every vote (hard task for any Party). This is the only way we can get rid of National and after Serco, after Charter Schools, after selling our state assets, the manipulation of public opinion, the dishonesty, the complete lack of a moral compass, Bogans are just as important as anyone suffering this current Government. I join all to release their inner Bogan, who are many here, it seems, and say Fuck National and the horsepower they rode in on and claim back our country before it's too late.
Oh and if anyone has a beef with Labour, may I suggest, advise them personally. Take the power of people to the source. I liked Stephen Judds punishment over his view of Labours behaviour whereby he hit them in the pocket until they do better.

ETA, I have no idea how that is in reply to Mr Crawford. Ne'er mind

  • Steve Barnes,

The problem with all these Bogons and Westies with those V8 cars is that they are all Torque.

I rebuilt one of my own ragtop Triumph in later years.

The Triumph Herald, of the infamously primitive swing axle rear suspension, which sadly nobbled its promise of being a sports car on a bogan budget. Hark the Herald axles swing, as they once said in the trade.

That Vitesse of your auntie's was still pretty ace though Sofie.

Q: What's the difference between an Austin Allegro and a Jehovah's Witness?
A: You can shut the door on a Jehovah's Witness.

My bad. Aunty didn't live in Christchurch by any chance? When my brother was a Ford apprentice there a woman owner would bring her late 60s T-bird in for service. Because she was such a sedate driver 90% of the necessary decoking could be achieved by a few blatts around the perimeter of Hagley Park. The lads jostled for that job.

Born and raised in CHCH but owned the T bird in Baton Rouge. Gran had the Mustang in her older years in CHCH and an Uncle recently located it still in the South Island. I may try get that one day, for sentimental reasons.

That Cars and Girls clip appears to feature the rather wonderful Photoing on Car. A curious portrayal of capitalist decadence from Gang of Four era China, it was sold in NZ in the early 70s.

    Editorial:

The Sunday Star Times formed in 1994, so that late-1960s/early 1970s jalopy must have been one of the last remaining company cars of its type. Honestly can't tell from the side profile, but it's probably not a Mk1 Escort, Mk2 Cortina or HB Vauxhall Viva. Doubt it's a Holden Special because the coke-bottle hip is too pronounced for it.
