  • Emma Hart,

Oh, God, how long would it take for all that brooding and hair-product to get tired? No sex is that good. Never.

Oh goody, and excuse to post this:

  • giovanni tiso,

Personally, I think we should celebrate Saint Sebastian's day on the 20th January instead. Instead of giving flowers, we'd all go get pierced.

    Ohhh, that's brilliant.

  • Rob Hosking,

I was born in October. They were all conceived in the Southern hemisphere, me in the North. The only thing I can think of is that there really wasn't much to do in NZ in May in those days...

Maybe early June. Queens Birthday Weekend. Long weekend, cold weather....

    Super classy.

I tip my hat to you, sir.

  • FletcherB,

Definitely. And Daniel Craig for sure if we didn't share a last name which I think I would find slightly off-putting.

Lots of married people find it off-putting too. :)

  • Stewart,

Emma, this Valentines Day is also my brother's 50th birthday and yet I am not you. And you are not my sister... or are you?

Not that big of a coincidence, I guess, but still...

Spooky, possums. I guess, "Stewart", I have no objective way of knowing if you're one of my other brothers or not. You'd know if I were your sister, though. You'd just know. Cause, y'know, this is my name and everything. Honest.

It is Jennifer Anniston's 40th today. There will be tears, as I am sure will we learn from the women's weeklies.

  • Stewart,

No need for the quote-marks, Emma, I am Stewart not someone pretending to be me.

And I agree, I would know if you were my sister.

  • Richard Llewellyn,

Put me down for Elle MacPherson

Okay. On Elle's behalf, you're ugly and your mother dresses you funny.

Hah - Emma, this could have been a sample conversation from a family Sunday roast. Pwned.

  • Dinah Dunavan,

Damn, I've only just caught up with this post. All those chores to do, cakes to bake.

I just have to add my $3.50 worth (inflation doncha know)

Hugh Grant for steamy affair but Colin Firth for love and marriage. Hugh is definitely cuter but has that tendency to do it with ho's in public.

Emma - was that with two of the three guys at the same time? Just checking.

I got roses one year because boyfriend's mother worked in a florist. And I have been known to make heart shaped pink iced biscuits.

Love those Mills & Boon covers. But what does "Grace before meat" mean! The mind boggles.

Donald, the Special Collections Librarian at Otago, has a thing for trashy covers. He used some of his collection in an exhibition a few years back.

  • Sayana,

I spent Valentine's Day 2004 seeing David Bowie. It was very romantic in a letting long suppressed teenage fantasies run free kind of way.

Hey, was that the day it rained as if all the clouds in sky opened at once, it was freezing cold (for February) and he DIDN'T play Space Oddity [mutter, mutter, grumble]?

If so, we were there too - wonderful concert!

  • Sayana,

Best/most romantic thing that ever happened to me on Valentine's Day was being given a slingshot.

    Oh, and, Colin Firth.

You got a slingshot AND Colin Firth or V Day? Sounds like a good day to me.

  • Danielle,

I was at that Bowie show too, wondering why Brooke Fraser got all the good weather. God was on her side, clearly.

(My unplayed song desire was 'Station to Station', but I can see why he didn't want to get all 10-minute-prog-disco-epic.)

But what does "Grace before meat" mean! The mind boggles.

Indeed. If the heroine's name is Grace, I'm really disturbed.

Emma - was that with two of the three guys at the same time? Just checking.

I shall cough, shift in my seat, and mutter something unintelligible.

I cannot but think of the third guy, alone on the street, singing "I, who have nothing."

  • linger,

    Grace before meat

The cover shows a woman, presumably Grace, with some guy standing immediately behind her, who is then, presumably, the other referent.
    Otherwise: wot Sacha said.

  • Jacob Powell,

I cannot but think of the third guy, alone on the street, singing "I, who have nothing."

The thought of an instant invitation to 'come on up' being delivered to only two out of three serenaders seems too cruel...please Emma, tell me it is too cruel.

Though, two guys leaving their apparently keen friend standing curb side (it was his idea I seem to remember), with merely the obligatory feigned apologetic shoulder shrug and embarrassed eyebrow lift, somehow seems as likely as it does terrible...

  • Jacob Powell,

As for Valentine's Day antics, some friends and I - in our younger days - also delivered random gifts to various friends who weren't in relationships and who we believed may appreciate the effort. Why we thought leaving a random array of 'privately acquired' flowers - deposited in a discarded toilet bowl we'd found in an inorganic rubbish collection heap - outside one of the girls parents' house is beyond me now. Clearly it would make sense if you applied the logic of a group of adolescent males.

Another Valentine's Day gift of note that i delivered to a friend one year was a package containing a raw chicken breast and some ready to eat pumpkin soup. I wonder now if something about this whole 'romance' thing eluded me?

  • Danielle,

Once I saw an interview with Meatloaf (I think it was on IceTV, actually), in which he said that a surprising number of people approached him to tell him that they had 'Two Out of Three Ain't Bad' as their wedding song! He was incredulous: 'have you listened to the LYRICS?'
