No worries then ... I can't keep time with anything.

So the great thing about things like TOFO and Megan and Boganette’s Feminazi Boner-Killer Drinks is that they’re a chance to get together, off-line, and remind ourselves that there are, in fact, lots of women who think the same way we do, to reassure and rejuvenate each other.

Much as I would not like having my boner killed, they also sound like a lot of fun when y'all tweet about them.

*Edit: the tapping must be in time, btw.

So the fact you just secretly like Madonna, and have always danced to her music, both in clubs and the comfort of your own home, means you fail this test?

I always thought it was a different test I was failing.

She really does have a plethora of great singles.

(Of course, I also think this about Wham!, and I get so much 'bish, please' for it.)

    Pet Shop Boys, FTW.

Paid to see them only recently, so there.

ETA: I'm singing Club Tropicana now. Damn it all!
    (Shh, I don't actually mind)

The awesomeness of Wham! may, in fact, be the only issue in the world I am willing to say 'men think like this, women think like that' about.

Where did you see them? Do you have photos? Pet Shop Boys are my boyfriends. Do you have their album Concrete (Live)? Oh, I am so jealous.
And as for Wham, all those people wearing headphones grooving at 6am on their little walks? They are listening to the same thing I'm listening to. And if they aren't, they should be.

Mildly off topic, but worth sharing: "VD is catching". Absolutely hilarious poster from the 1970s.

Actually, maybe it wasn't as recently as I thought. At the St James, in 2007. Amazing how '4 years ago' became 'recently'. What happened there?

    Wham! may

    let me finish that sentence:

own the best bassline ever in pop with Everything She Wants. (12" mix natch)

The Francois K dub mix of Wham Rap was not only an eighties killer but an underground club anthem in New York and Chicago for large parts of that decade.

    History, kids, history.

Excellent! Simon, I shall wave these facts triumphantly in my (Madonna-fan, Wham!-scorning) husband's face when he gets home this evening.

Can I say the only time I've ever thought 'Ok, I can live with that' when someone other than Freddy M sang a Queen song was George M, with the rest of the Queen band, doing 'Somebody to love'. No? Oh well, too late.

  • Danielle,

Bart, listen without prejudice. (You see what I did there?)

Since I went on a Wham! YouTube binge just now, I want to note that ‘Freedom’ is an utterly fantastic Motown-esque pop song.

There are so many hooks in it that it’s actually nuts. And then at the end, what the hell with the ‘Penny Lane’ horn fadeout? Badass!

(George Michael DOES need to stop driving. Forever. I’ll give you that.)

Can I just say how freaking happy what's happened to this thread makes me?

Say what you like about George, he belts it out like a good 'un.

One of the few times he really lets go, about 3:25 in this:

I just wish he’d get back to making music, because I’m kind of bored with the whole big gay Amy Winehouse routine. It's sad watching a genuinely talented man turn into a tabloid punchline.

This is like one of those conversations you have with your friends and suddenly someone asks "how did we end up talking about this?" ... I love those conversations.

But Danielle I can say without prejudice that I hated Wham when they came out first and I still hate them ... which is not the case with ABBA but then again we haven't had a Muriel's Wedding for Wham so who knows...

The Pet Shop Boys have forgotten more about making outstanding pop than most bands will ever know. That is all.

I have attended the Wgtn Feminazi Boner-Killer drinks as a token representative of the patriarchy. They're a good bunch of people.

That they are. I had a delightful assignation with Ms. Boganette and several other emasculating harpies in a hotel bar a few weeks back, and it was not in the least diminished by the presence of Mr. Boganette. Shall we just say he's 1) not stupid, and, 2) not at all difficult to objectify for any length of time.

(Emma might find Black Swan’s deployment of the depraved bisexual trope particularly amusing/enraging/nauseating.)

From what I have heard, I honestly cannot decide how drunk I would have to be to just laugh instead of get enraged.

YMMV, of course, but to me Kunis's character is the only halfway sane person in the whole movie. She's mellow, she's kind, she's at ease with herself. Everyone else is creepy and obsessive.
