  • BenWilson,

From memory, Band Camp in that movie was synonymous with the story no one wanted to hear. The girl is plainly cracking on to Jim the entire movie, but every time she mentions Band Camp (bar one, the flute story) his eyes glaze over and he tries to escape.

  • Lucy Telfar Barnard,

Oops, I clearly just failed a pop culture test.

But, well, that would fit. Noone would want to hear it because it would be too dull. Apart from the flute story: According to my version, the flute story must be an invention.

No, I don't think so. It's a phrase that took on its own dynamic, entirely due to the flute episode and that Michelle then gives Jim a very rude shag. It came to symbolize the sexual diamond in the rough, the cooling of nerdiness, which was after all what that movie was all about. So you had it right, Band Camp since that movie has come to mean that one story....

Edit: But yes, it's possible that she made it up. She was fucking desperate by that point in the story. I've seen the movie sequel actually titled "Band Camp", but I can't remember anything about it at all.

  • BenWilson,

Just for reference. For backstory, Jim's sudden interest in her is based on her not knowing why he is bumming out, which is probably the funniest bit of the movie. Well, that and the pie.
