  • Hard News: Bringing an order Auckland…,

Maybe they should change the name to the "Some of the Southern Bits of Auckland Energy Trust". Auckland's a bit bigger these days and I've never even heard of the Trust.

  • Hard News: Radio Punks: So many stories, in reply to Robyn Gallagher,

Yep, exactly. I only found it by accident one night, dialed the radio too far and hit the magic moment where a DJ was telling someone if they wanted to hear some Wham they could get fucked. 14 year old me had never heard anything like that on the air and was hooked instantly.

  • Hard News: Radio Punks: So many stories,

My favourite moment on Contact was when I was doing the Opus classical show one Thursday night in O-Week, and they'd put big speakers down by the lake. Some guy came into the studio to tell me he'd been lying by the water listening to the show, really stoned, and really getting into it. He was worried that he knew his dad loved classical music, and maybe his dad was stoned the whole time too!

  • Hard News: The other kind of phone tapping,

I was at the tail end of the tapping thing, I knew how to do it and had tried it a couple of times to see how it worked, but never used it "for real". However... does anybody remember the old Telecom Phonecards with a mag stripe? Apparently you could spray the back with a few coats of hairspray, enough that the phone could read the credit off the card but couldn't write the new value back again. Free calls!

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Everybody Loves…,

Saw Roy Ayers at the East Coast Blues & Roots in 2003, just a magnificent show. Between him, Robert Randolph and Sly & Robbie (and the Violent Femmes and Tuck & Patti and......) it was a big weekend.

  • Hard News: Five further thoughts,

Honestly I think it's not just one leader that's the problem. It's time for an entire generation of Labour MP's to step down and admit they've had their time. Let some fresh blood come through and see what happens. The soundbites that kept coming out about how people should consider Labour because it's been around for so long were ridiculous.

  • Speaker: If political parties were beer ..., in reply to George Darroch,

George, you could be on to something. I always find Steinlager Pure makes me feel quite unwell, as does the National Party!

  • Feed: Fulminating and fermenting,

That looks really tasty. I think you're a couple of years behind the times in terms of local session beers though, they're all over the place now. Brothers even held a sessionable beer festival early this year with about 18 beers on tap, and the strongest one there was the homebrewer group effort at a bit over 5%.

  • Hard News: The People's Poet is dead!, in reply to Mr Mark,

In fact, I think the first most New Zealanders saw of it was when the second series of The Young Ones won a Bafta in 84 or 85 (and they showed the scene of Vyvian kicking his head along the railway tracks on the way to University Challenge).

Yup, that's exactly my memory of it. I saw that clip on the news when I was about 14, then my dad went off his nut about how terrible it was and it was an instant favourite before I'd even seen the show!
