  • Hard News: Morning in Auckland,

Of course the suspension is PR spin. My guess is that advertisers got worried about boycott talk all over Facebook etc. It won't be anything to do with good sense or decent TV.

  • Hard News: Do these people even talk?,

The sad thing about this whole saga is that you're right Russell, the development fund clearly isn't for this sort of project. But, Maori TV is the only channel that looks like it belongs to us, it is passionate, quirky, homegrown etc. Whereas TVNZ treat us all like fools night after night - and my Great Aunt Sheila would give a more lively and interesting rugby commentary.

  • Hard News: The Cullen investment,

Pity Pita accepted his portfolio outside cabinet. Can't really complain that he's not in the tent can he?

  • Speaker: ReEntry IV: Hills, Harbour and…,

Agree also. The Dompost reflects nothing of our exciting beautiful city. The more tabloid it gets the more tired it becomes.

Social marketing doesn't pop out of someone's head, it is a process where strategy is based on research. This determines which group of people should be targeted in order to reduce the problem (young men are more likely to be killed drinking and driving etc) and the messages that will motivate them to change that behaviour. The campaigns are constantly evaluated for effectiveness and changed if they aren't working.
Calling these campaigns PC gone mad is completely batty. The road toll has halved, smokers go outside, kids don't get hit or live a childhood of violence.
Columnists are cheaper than hiring a serious journalist who takes longer than 15 minutes to bash out a story. They insult our intelligence and drive us to the internet - so ads sales go down and they have to hire more columnists.

  • Up Front: The Home Straight,

I grew up further inland in Fairlie, but used to make that hot trip up to Christchurch to see the grandparents. Turning off at Geraldine on the way home was always a sign that it was almost over - we'd soon know the names of all the farms we went passed and the kids living there. The bench seats in the Vauxhall would get hot and sticky, the four kids would scrap, dad would smoke, mum would zone out.
I just waved some friends off as they set off to Auckland - the kids are watching a movie on a laptop in the back seat. Which is cloth, and there's air con, cd, radio, ipods, etc etc. Bet they get as bored as we did.

  • Hard News: From soundbite to policy,

Sorry, 1989 Education Act - you're right National came in soon after. They thought the act was dreadful - if it had been 2008 they would have repealed it by lunchtime.

Thank you for your interest Jan. She's just turned 24 and is living in a house with a young couple and their baby. Lots of people come and go and it's a great place. We don't use any services, just have a network of people who help support her. She hasn't got school cert or NCEA but she's got a great community...
Taught me a lot about marginalised people. Despair of this punishment-focused government who would rather lock people up or fine them than find out why things are going wrong. Pretty damn basic really.

  • Hard News: From soundbite to policy,

Here's a strange thing. When my daughter was mainstreamed at her local school in 1989, the Minister of Education, speaking on Morning Report, called me a zealot because I was insisting that my daughter "who would never learn anything" was "sucking up money from other kids."
He's now Speaker of the House.
    And he's called honorable.

  • Hard News: Pomp and Circumstance,

Lockwood Smith will struggle as speaker. He'll puff up that little chest of his and make grand, thoughtful decisions in a very loud, deep TV quizz host voice and everyone will fall about laughing. Maybe he should wear his speedos.
