  • Hard News: The Crazy Gang Nation, in reply to Idiot Savant,

I can’t think of another mature democracy where gerrymandering or disenfranchisement are seen as legitimate political tactics.

Auckland Council was set up by National/Act with the smallest ward having 66.7% as many voters as the biggest.

Of the 20 councillors the 4 with the least number of voters/councillor are all right wing. Meanwhile the 4 at the other end of the scale, representing 30% more voters, are 3 on the left and 1 on the right.

  • Hard News: No Red Wedding, in reply to Andrew Geddis,

statements like this one, from Sue Kedgely

I'm not sure that things said by someone who retired at the last election are a good predictor for the policies they'll push after the next election.

we don’t know what the policy actually means (and I suspect it was written this way so as to satisfy everyone)

Yeah, there are some Green policies which seem important to them and which have plenty of detail, and others which they don't seem to be really trying with.

  • Hard News: No Red Wedding, in reply to Bart Janssen,

I wouldn’t be too upset to see Science go to a Green MP ….except of course for the couple of odd areas where they seem to utterly abandon science for ideology

I get the impression that the evidence-backed policy areas are most important to the Green MPs, and therefore also to a majority of the rank-and-file members who voted for them to be high up the list. I pay the most attention to the issues I'm more interested in of course, which may be skewing my perception of this.

  • Hard News: Event Season, in reply to Farmer Green,

I’m looking forward to the day when there is an open discussion here

Well, if this is about the IPCC report due at the end of next week then we can hardly have an informed discussion about it yet.

From what I can tell nothing major has changed. Apparently at least one part of the draft report has a wider range of projections than the report from 2007 but describes the likelihood of those differently they can't be directly compared anyway. The middle of the range is the same. This is being misreported by some "news" sources with a history of misreporting on these matters.

Anyway, this is even more off topic than expensive boats going around in circles so I'm going to leave it at that.

  • Speaker: The Strange Tax on Your Internet, in reply to Bart Janssen,

phrasing it as a tax is deceptive as well since it then appears as if all New Zealanders are paying when in fact it is only those who pay for the internet who are paying

The petrol tax is only paid by those who pay for petrol.

In NZ a landlord can give 90 days’ notice and that’s the end of the matter

Or 42 days in some circumstances where it'd be particularly useful for the landlord.

  • Hard News: So long, and thanks for all…, in reply to Tom Semmens,

With all those PI voters who Labour need to get to the polls in 2014 needing some convincing, Labour electing a gay Wellington based machine politician as leader would be a disaster.

Yeah, just like with all those farmers that National needs it'd be a disaster if they picked as their leader an Auckland based money trader.

I imagine or at least hope- that the smart telco would want to get first mover indentification as the telco to give the best service for watching content over the internet (something I already associate with ORCON with their unlimited caps on youtube and isky)

Not any more. Orcon closing O Zone because Sky changing content delivery network. Of course those organisations describe this as "changes" and an "upgrade".

The war game that a couple of posters referred to, which got reset and the opposing force ordered not to do anything unexpected, was Millennium Challenge 2002.
