  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie,

Reports about the Inspector Dave Cliff interview on Sunday have reached my delicate little ears. It seems like he was (kindly) incredibly "on message" throughout the interview, or (more realistically) incredibly intransigent, and deliberately misleading. When asked about the possibility of diversion for Arie's first court appearance in March, he repeatedly referred to events at the May hearing, even when specifically told that the question referred to March and Arie's early guilty plea. All other questions were answered with the same preface - "You have to place the events in context. Christchurch was a city in crisis...". Apparently, this excuses all Police behaviour, including misleading a Judge with a false document.

  • Hard News: When the Weather is the News,

Heard a story today that two guys got around (possibly bribed) the cordon on SH3 at the bottom of the Rimutukas last night, trekked to the summit, and boarded down the road to the bottom. Would be a magic run.

  • Muse: Hooray for Wellywood (Really!),

I thought the building above the proposed sign used to be used by Civil Aviation, and then was bought by the the airport and leased to Jackson's Wingnut Films. Barrie Osbourne used to have an office up there. It might be why the big wigs in Miramar have kept a noticeable silence on this one.

Personally, I'll be aiming to sit on the other side of the aircraft when using Wellington's airport. It could lead to issues onboard aircraft when frequent fliers refuse to open their blinds so as to avoid looking at the abomination on the way in or out. Tourists, on the other hand, might not be able to get past the view of gorse, aviation tank farms, disused wharves and gang pads before they even get to stupid sign.

  • Hard News: Doing battle alone,

The life of an independent journalist is not always a happy one. The costs involved of getting in to Afghanistan, hiring translators/drivers, paying for medical and life insurance are enough to weed out all but the most committed (or insane). All the while you're unsure whether you are going to find an outlet that will pay enough for you to recoup your expenses, let alone make enough to research the next story. My understanding was that execs at TV3 were very reluctant to pay the previously-agreed price for the latest 60 Minutes story - and it took the lobbying of Mike McRoberts to convince said bosses that it was an important story, and that they had an obligation to Stephenson. Thank god they saw the light.

  • Hard News: Playing the Man,

I guess the problem for Stephenson is that some/most of his NZDF and SAS sources will have talked only on conditions of anonymity. If the official NZDF sources say one thing, and his say another, then he might run into some problems.

  • Hard News: The digital switch-off,

With broadcast viewer numbers dropping steady advertising revenue is getting harder and harder to maintain.

This seems to be the perceived wisdom, but can anyone point me in the direction of some actual figure for NZ that back this up this notion of audience numbers dropping?
