I resigned for family reasons... Yeah right

    Pansy Wong's e-newsletter:

Sensing that the relentless efforts of the media over his stolen e-mails had impacted on National’s efforts in holding the government to account, he chose to step down as leader and will be retiring from politics in 2007.

I mean, Don would know better than she would, but still.

  • Island Life: Citizen Key With A Vengeance,

I'll just add my support for what Craig said.

Though it might take a while for the media to stop screaming that it's a problem every time a leader tries acting like a sensible human being.

One of the lessons of performance improv, which from the above appears to be bourne out in the rest of life, is that you can't have good ideas if you're terrified of being wrong.

  • Word of the Year 2006,

SInce the word came up in R Brown's latest, I would like to nominate "emo".

From my personal experience it seems to have leapt into wider prominence this last wee while and seems to capture a thread of the zeitgeist.

I also feel it neatly describes the year in politics:

"I hate you! You're so corrupt! You stole my election!"

"Don't call me corrupt, you don't understand, you're just doing this to hurt me! And anyway, you have secretive financial backers and you're a liar!"

    Et cetera, ad infinitum.

Kiwi bands to get on board for iTunes NZ

    Press Release: Jiggy.co.nz
    November 30, 2006
    For immediate release
Kiwi bands to get on board for iTunes NZ

It’s a matter of when, not if, for iTunes to launch a store in New Zealand – finally! – and digital music distributor Jiggy.co.nz is calling for New Zealand bands to get in before the rush starts.

Jiggy.co.nz is asking New Zealand acts to submit albums to it for early inclusion for the New Zealand iTunes store, following meetings yesterday with between Jiggy director Dave Gibbons and iTunes representatives.

  • Island Life: I have aspirations going,

This latest speech to the Foreign Affairs & Defence Seminar has a reasonable content-to-word ratio. It's not a policy, or anything, but considering the past policy round such as it was happened, what, a week before the election, he seems to be doing okay.

I understood David's basic point to be that there wasn't anything much in the speech to get excited about. Or not, depending on how tangible you like your politics.

It was also, like many posts on Public Address, an opinion piece. And consequently, opinionated. I'd have said 'propoganda' is a bit strong.

Incidentally, David, the duckspeak machine appear to frown on things like, well, prepositions.

  • Word of the Year 2006,

This website also removes my double-spacing and replaces it with a (smaller) paragraph gap.

Why oh why must we have this typographic elegance imposed on us?

  • Word of the Year 2006,

It's been said that the widespread use of -gate to describe scandal was encouraged by a former Nixon advisor who wanted to make Watergate seem more commonplace.

I've been hanging out for fencegate. If corngate had been called farmgate, I'd have been a happy man.

I like the -box idea in principle, but if we gave, for example, Ian Wishart free use of that suffix, I worry about what he might come up with.

On hyphens (though not, I must emphasise alarming definiteness, dashes)...

How about that movie 'Eight Legged Freaks'?

    OMFG! Eight freaks with legs!

  • Word of the Year 2006,

I find myself occasionally trying to handwrite italics... it really doesn't work does it.

Mind you, I don't often expect a browser window to pop up if I click on handwriting...

People, I'm assured, only started underlining type in the first place because typewriters couldn't do bold or italic. (See 'your Mac/PC is not a typewriter').

And underlining does kind of suck as a means of emphasis - I'm of a mind that it draws more attention to the line than the words. And if you underline it twice, it actually gets worse.

So it's not a big fuss for me if silly people get confused by underlining.

Man, if we want a bitching about typography thread, I could stay all day.
