  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

May I suggest a wee lie down old chap… that celebratory Baldock pic, his lunkhead mates on the piss, has negated your specious burble for this reader anyway.

  • Hard News: On Ideas,

The prolific Gordon Campbell at scoop says what I think too:

Peter Conway at NZCTU has produced numbers to confirm that Aussie wages headed off into the distance in the ECA years-1991-99.

    Privatise Treasury first indeed!

  • Hard News: Another entry in the Public…,

Brave post RB as personal as it gets, so will add some personal comments. I empathise. Kidney stones are intensely painful alright, pain induced puking painful, no relief without powerful pharmaceuticals. Women friends who have had kids may say toughen up guys, but I have seen women drop with gall stones later on. The human condition. In a small number of cases kidney stones can even be present from birth. Mainly they form via lifestyle and diet.

Sparing readers more gruesome details of diagnosis (dye tests etc) and attacks, there is the good news. Drink water, enough water to ensure that urine always runs clear is the trick. Have another small glass if you wake up during your sleep period. The water keeps the crap in suspension and eliminated before crystals form.

  • Hard News: F**kin' Choice,

Crosby Textor are the personification of bullying creeps. I almost fired off a sharp email to them, but rethought, those pricks might come after me too! as I would have to use my real name in such correspondence.

CT enabled the Nats to lie their way into office and dare to sue one of our few journalistic treasures-Nicky Hager. If you do not concur with me who ya gonna nominate? The list of toadies is long, as evidenced by Sean Plunkett and K. Ryan on RNZN today (employing Hooten and Griffen in obviously conflicted roles). To boot, TVNZ studios would have needed extra cleaning after whaleblubber on Close Up.

  • Regard Auckland II: WTF?,

Many citizens cognititive processes are catching up at last with the reality of the government carving up Auckland in real time. These are genuine right wingers, the joke is officially over.

Banks was unconsciously referring to an already written script with yesterdays comments on staff levels. Thousands of families are really in for it if the estimated 3000 staff do get the boot.

The weekend legislation allows basically the overthrow of previously elected local authorities. Working for the clampdown alright.

  • Hard News: Now It's On,

Well actually it does matter who wins the election if you agree that the “Nats” job is same as it ever was-redistributing wealth upstairs.

The indicators speak–minimum wage frozen 1991-4, $1 increase over 9 years under Nat led governments vs. 70% increase since 1999 under Labour led governments. Repeat for other indicators.

Taser proof vests and coreflute sign stock sales will go through the roof if slippery John wins. They will not be Laour Lite.

  • Speaker: Singing g against the E chord,

Well, I’m going with Herbs 1981 debut EP “Whats Be Happen?” This has never been released on cd nor have any of it’s songs appeared on the various Herbs compilations.
It is still around in some ‘pre owned’ stores. The classic cover art–a powerful black & white aerial photo of Bastion Point showing police encircling iwi and supporters, a hand tooled logo, and seaside sounds intro on opening track “One brotherhood Aotearoa” made this one stand out from the herd in ’81. Then manager Will Illolahia was with the Polynesian Panthers, the early Herbs were the real deal.

No student flat angst for these guys. Political in the general sense somewhat like Bob M. In “Azania soon come” they do a roll call of emerging and to be African states. While things have turned out differently than hoped for back then of course, in ’81 it looked most unlikely that Mandela would get out of jail or make old bones.

A revolving band cast was really down to the economics of the NZ music business, and the poor buggers got hit for every benefit concert going.

Drummer Fred Faleauto’s cousin and I were good friends and workmates (Biko squad Auckland too) and so I got something of an inside perspective. I know Fred had listened long to the Jamaican 45s with the big holes in the middle gifted by Bob Marley’s crew a couple of years previous. Fred is sadly deceased but I remember him while very ill, singing at the ‘protestors and fellow travellers only’1995 gathering in St. Mathews in the city where N. Mandela really enjoyed meeting some of the tour veterans.

Never mind all that I guess, its in the grooves I say mon–a unique, engaging hybrid sound never quite matched by their more laid back heirs. “Pacific Reggae” is a hopeful but ultimately too simplistic tag for Herbs Mk1. Get a copy or a listen if you can.

  • Stories: Memorable Meals,

yes well, meat is always murder. Many folks manage to keep a certain distance from the slashing and torturing part though. Seafood slaughter doesn’t bother as many for some reason.

Would you be interested in some human kebabs or a Lecter like oyster perhaps Sam if your girlfriends family was that way inclined also?

  • Stories: Memorable Meals,

We’ll leave the perfect meal out of this for now. The ‘White Lady’ when Pete Washer cooked regularly in late 70s was a sure thing, kept many a V8 driver from a total liquid ’n speed diet. Bathtub crank in those days not your tricksy P. These were nights when Murray Cammick, known to some around here, prowled with his SLR, eventually producing “Flash Cars” a photo forum exhibition at Airdale St.
The perfect combo of crisply toasted buttered bun, sweet fried onions, beefy tomato, fresh lettuce and made in trailer peppery mince patty, sounds easy, and it is easy–to get such an elemental munch wrong!–this rarely happened at the ’Lady in my considerable experience.
It could be a bovine scene if you lingered, one fellow cruiser regularly ordered, and was served, a burger containing “triple egg, triple meat, no salad” which would possibly have the owner investigated these days.

  • Hard News: TV is social. Already,

Macs robustness continues to satisfy me, try running Vista on a 2001 Dell! (with no hardware mods). My sons ‘snow’ G3 imac–cost–free, plus $6 for a firewire cable, runs current OSX Tiger 10.4.10 very well and even Adobe CS2, albeit one app at a time. Yeah I hear official Leopard support will be omitted for G3s, but “no one left behind” can go too far even for us mac loyalists. As an ex user of lightboards, lenco waxers and xacto knives I have not yet lost my sense of wonder of the digital era. For a freelancer Macs still do accurate colour better and consistently produce error free press ready .pdfs. There are not many if any dud modern macs out there.

Apple does seem on a bit of a world domination bender at the moment–Pixar, iphone, apple TV etc. but anyone who may possibly get rid of Flash is fine by me! There is a rich history to this company from Quicktime, Next, through their new X serve technology and the itunes model of media distribution. This is a company that follows through, WinCE or a Zune anyone? Or would you prefer an iphone perhaps.
