  • Hard News: The Public Address 2012 Word…,

    Woty - relaxed
As in I'm relaxed about all the faux pas I've made this year

Wotd- like (with thumbs up symbol)
From Facebook. We may try to deny but this has been the phenomenon even in NZ. And it started in 2004, though seems to be on the wane from next year.

  • Hard News: This is your public broadcasting,

For info about the Coalition for Better Broadcasting email betterbroadcasting at gmail. We will be rolling soon.

Yes we were on the warpath about the Triangulated Sky but about Sky much more than Triangle. What rankled was Sky's claims of 'giving' Triangle a hand (won't cost them much) without acknowledging that Triangle are giving them a channel free - a very useful channel to round out their offering and increase subscribers.

Triangle are otherwise screwed so we understand their lack of any other options.

Ironically the Herald's attempt at advocacy journalism to raise the drinking age failed.

  • Hard News: Irony Deficient,

What are you saying? We have two of the best satire shows in the country playing on TV every night at 6 (also Shortland Street). Equally several great satirical print publications are printed each day around the country. And there is plenty more everywhere you care to look. The problem for all of them is that for satire to work, at some point the audience has to be let in on the joke - a laugh track, a lie too ludicrous to conceive or a big banner saying SATIRE!

Although our "news" media is often laughable, this country's greatest satirists are currently deep in their own mirth and wondering at what point they will let the cat out of the bag. Perhaps when 'Breakfast TV' moves to 7pm, the joke will finally have been shared with us all.

  • Hard News: For want of some purpose, in reply to Islander,

One possible reason they target youth is that youth are more likely to be sucked into buying stuff because they see an ad for it. Maturity brings the ability to ignore the voice that demands you to 'buy!'

  • Hard News: Media7 will soon be Media3, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Sorry for flogging a dead horse, but did anyone suggest to Curran that if her party is serious about public television they might want to rethink putting a kill switch on the funding next time? Blah blah of course I’d say that etc. but really…

that really IS a dead horse, the Labour Party policy is totally different to the previous govt. We need to keep the heat on them to make sure the next incarnation of PSTV is funded independently of Treasury - levy on Sky and ISPs (the new broadcasters)

  • Hard News: Media7 will soon be Media3, in reply to Russell Brown,

This is great news. It'll be interesting to see your ratings - especially on Sat morning. Also you'll have to turn the heat up at times on your own bosses so please - no more self-censoring.

As for Saving TVNZ 7 we'll take it to the wire - you never know. And then it'll be bring back 7, not so much because TVNZ 7 is perfect (it isn't) but because it's all that most Kiwis know of public service TV channels.

Here's to another 5 years at TV3! Good luck

  • Hard News: Reading the Numbers,

I've had a go with Mike Hosking already - listen here. In the 90 seconds I had to explain the issue between intensive advertising, I was asked why TVNZ 7 is important to which I said it doesn't have ads so it doesn't need to simplify subjects down to a soundbite.

Perhaps the station took that personally as it then produced this.

  • Legal Beagle: MMP Review #3: The Submission,

A note on my "tosh". Perhaps you're bemoaning the few candidates who openly discourage electorate votes for themselves such as Gareth Hughes and Paul Goldsmith. Yet this incongruity is easily fixed by changing the One seat threshold rather than distortions created by disallowing dual candidacy (which you point out elsewhere).
