  • Hard News: There is History,

"Nick Smith is currently in isolation."

I'm yet to be convinced that has anything to do with the flu.

  • Hard News: Madness in Mt Albert,

Jumping in a bit late, so hope I'm not going over old ground. I'm very weary of anyone spouting ACT (Sir Rogers) Defense policy, now wearing the colours of Labour.

Policy is there to be implimented.

As for Norman, good on him. No other party has given a serious push for a big political player.

The problem with 'safe' seats are the idiots who get them. Christchurch Centra -l Brendan Burns. Selwyn just got rid of its nutter and another is trying to get in.

Let the democratic process flow & if Labour doesn't win accept that it was Labours fault for fronting a person who supports ACT Defense Policy.

  • Hard News: It would be polite to ask,

Islander, I don't think I'll ever accept the fact a 12yr old was convicted of murder as any form of 'justice'.
And quite right with your critique & I wasn't trying to pun, just trying to spiel ;)

  • Hard News: It would be polite to ask,

Jumping in late but with refference to food & politics this thread seem the closest to be thread jumped.

Just had a squiz through the proposed Booze Act & some of it is really good and some of it is knee jerk stuff.

Advertising and police actions are tightning up, which seem good. Advertising/Promoting is tied to Health and has some real teeth to stop silly things going on.
Police can close bars in an area for 48hrs, rather than just that day, get the situation to calm down if a riot was happening. Sounds reasonable.
A local Alcohol Plan will be in place, which seems great.

    Knee jerk stuff.
Banning for 5yrs any bar manager who gets done for 3 underages in 2yrs. They even use the "three strikes & you're out" term. Having worked in a few bars you could have that happen in one night. Not ideal but a reality. Sure if it is persistant do the bar, but this is too prescriptive.
Trying to balance the books they have removed a bar managers judgement, you know the 20 questions like, when were you born...
It now has to be a specific card, thinking they've got that angle covered they've also made it an offense to falsify your ID.
So if raided the kids won't run they'll flick their IDs & the bar will have no proof they did their job & the kids will do this to avoid getting done for false IDs. Brilliant everybody loses.

Also banning Dairies from selling booze. The magic size is 150sqm, below that the dairy won't be able to sell booze, above that they can. Anticompetitive 10km restriction if you're 'close' to a supermarket.
Working shifts as many do (see above) the night & day allows me to buy a six pack at 2am have a few, but not anymore. FFS does Lianne Dalzeil have shares in New World or something.

Oh if you have a private party and someone is 17yrs old they have to have a note from Mum to say they can drink or you'll be done & all the booze from the party taken. Even if you think that guys girlfriend is 18 & you've never seen her before. You're in the poo if you organised it.

This is a bit too heavy, come on NZ we put a 12yr old in jail for a murder because he called the pizza or something. I think we can let precious take the wrap if they lied to Mum & Dad about the party and the booze.

Well that turned into a little rant (sorry) but it's alot shorter than the Act.

  • Hard News: Of Monsters and Old Boys,

Christ's gave away fagging & flogging in the 80s.

The fag was a 3rd former who served the prefect/7th former & any cannings were given by the prefect.

I've got a mate whos parents will pay for his son to go & keep the family tradition but he's going state. Absolutely hated his time there and the offer is for their son only, no mention of their daughters education.

As for Boys' High, I've never come across such a chauvanistic attitude as these students have towards their school. Be proud, sure but these guys are as bad as the old Cantab embankment crowd (complete with pissing in public).

There are a few quiet achievers out there, Cashmere High has a great music school, Middleton Grange is fundy with a great school community, the list goes on but I won't.

The real concern is if you live on the West Coast or in Kaikoura, then you have something to worry about. I hope they're being worked on.

  • Hard News: Veitch,

"Glenda Hughes must be regretting her decision to take him on, and I suspect she wouldn't be the only one."

Jackie I recon she'll be regretting this all the way to the bank. This is what she does and she'll be in the wings for the next rich dick to fall.

As for Veitch he's incredibly honest and he is depressed and not seeing the world clearly at all. Hence the "why me" & "I was driven to it".

If there are two TV "stars" who pulled it off the crime & contrition stuff and then back to business it has to be our two narco celebs [Just thinking, please think a little harder before you type. Apart from it being unnecessary, one of the names you used here was plain wrong. Show some restraint -- RB]

10 Pts if you name the All Black who killed someone, got convicted and then got Reality TV jobs.

  • Field Theory: You'll Never Walk Alone,

I'm a Liverpool fan and never been to Liverpool, or the UK.
Rosie I like the sentiment you've expressed.

What we need to be careful of is the power we give to others.
Why were the Police in charge?
Why was there no co-ordination? Why were the assumptions that the crowd were invading the pitch rather than trying to live?

Some of my immediate thoughts revolve around class and power which are pretty ugly. Any other thoughts are welcome.

  • Hard News: For Good Friday,

Let's not concerntrate too much on Jebus or any other transcribed errors but rather the message of the man and communion within our community.
For me being in a Church helps me feel a stronger member of my community and helps me when I fail from time to time, not to mention celebrate the lives of those around me.
