  • Hard News: Welfare: Back to the Future?, in reply to Juha Saarinen,

For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat.

And why take ye thought for raiment?
    Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow;
they toil not, neither do they spin:

  • Cracker: Gimme Shelter, in reply to Rich Lock,

Rammstein were hilarious - proof of the cookie monster theory of heavy metal vocals, and (probably unintentionally) as camp as a row of tents.

  • Cracker: Gimme Shelter,

I get the whole booze = problems, but I've attended one day festivals in other countries where no rules about where you can drink are applied. I think its much more civilised, and does not encourage people to neck their drinks every time they want to go somewhere else (i.e. to see a band like?)

Let's see how Laneways goes - I gather they have dispensed with caging adult punters who wish to imbibe.

  • Cracker: Gimme Shelter,

Aw Damian that sucks, it only takes a bit of aggro like that to ruin the whole day (trust that it didn't though). I had no trouble of that kind though as a rule it's probably more likely to happen to blokes.

Just to contrast, I'm mostly positive about the BDO experience this year. The new tent/Boiler Room is MUCH better (air!), I'm pretty positive the sound system has been similarly upgraded as the quality of sound seems to be mostly good wherever you happen to be. LCD Soundsystem were my total highlight and since I didn't give much of a shit about any of the other acts I was free to wander and people watch and take in a few minutes of this and that. Plan B was an awesome surprise, and did anyone else see the balloonatic at Lilyworld?

  • Hard News: Floating the idea,

Thanks Christopher and Nick for your replies. Given the different approach in the old councils I imagine a comparison of pricing and quality of facilities across the new Auckland City would be instructive.

  • Hard News: Floating the idea,

Someone who understands how these things work may be able to answer the following question: who operates the council-owned pools across Auckland and is this being looked at? Can't seem to find any information about this.

My experience is only at Auckland City facilities which as I understand it are (all?) run by private operators on behalf of the council. Is this the same across all of Auckland and does it explain the sometimes very high cost?

  • Hard News: My Year in Culture,

I subscribed to the Silo this year (a joint Christmas pressie with my beloved). It was the best present I have got myself in years. Actually got us off our backsides into the theatre every few weeks and the Silo had a brilliant, brave and varied season. Will do again.

Also the ATC production of Cabaret was super rude and absolutely wonderful. I was mystified as to why the whole audience (except yours truly) was over 55?

  • Hard News: Unreasonable people vote,

If you haven't, read this - Matt Taibbi on the Tea Party

Vast forests have already been sacrificed to the public debate about the Tea Party: what it is, what it means, where it's going. But after lengthy study of the phenomenon, I've concluded that the whole miserable narrative boils down to one stark fact: They're full of shit. All of them. At the voter level, the Tea Party is a movement that purports to be furious about government spending — only the reality is that the vast majority of its members are former Bush supporters who yawned through two terms of record deficits and spent the past two electoral cycles frothing not about spending but about John Kerry's medals and Barack Obama's Sixties associations. The average Tea Partier is sincerely against government spending — with the exception of the money spent on them.

  • Field Theory: Though I never liked how…,

Amusing comment from Russell Baillie on the song with some alternative lyrics that are pretty spot on: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10635748

"Right here, right now/ There is no place in this ground for me/Right here, right now/ Watching the World Cup on my TV."
