  • Southerly: The Secret Poetry of Economists,

"If science can take on God, it should not fear the market. Both are, after all, creations of man. "

"We must stop perpetuating the fiction that existence itself is dictated by the immutable laws of economics."

    and Poets.

"The economic model has broken, for good. It's time to stop pretending it describes our world."

The above excerpts from this picked up from Arts and Letter Daily:

  • Hard News: The conversation they want to…,

How dare anyone denigrate Bill Orally like that. You might convince them to take him off!!!! Fox News is streaks ahead of the Comedy Channel. In entertainment value it is tops and Bill is one of several on there who have me in fits. What IS staggering and VERY sad is that the views expressed there are alive and living in the good 'ol US of A. Christ, no wonder no-one likes them. They make sure a good fact does not get in the way of a good bigot! Facts are all double-dutch to him anyway.

  • Hard News: Smack to the Future,

Well it looks like it is hittng a nerve in Australia.

    http://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/lifematters/smack-the-child-go-to-jail-parents-pressured-20090822-euef.html

New Zealands has a dismal record of childrens rights and the recent UN HCR asking for NZ to RAISE the age of criminal responsibility adds to it. I can't understand how anyone could deny rights to a child when the law did not allow assault on an adult.

    http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/stories/2009/08/23/1245c25f3d11

I suspect the govt response may have been different if this had come up on any other weekend other than the Referendum result. It would be bad to be seen going soft on Law'n order. Especially with the amendments to LOWER the age in the pipeline.

What ARE we? Why do we do this to the most vulnerable and the future citizens of our fair isle? How do we break the cycle?

When will we bring civics, rights and responsibilities into our schools? When will basic parenting be part of the curriculum that includes basic information of the damage that continuing to allow males (especially) to whack a child, or to understand that a crying child needs comfort not abuse to quieten down?

The referendum result and all the above are part of a continuum that desperately needs addressing.

Jeez, our future kids deserve it but future parents of this country need it.

  • Hard News: Let Us Spray: The Aftermath,

    Dear Auckland,

1 million people crap next to the Manakau and Waitemata. Probably close to that in cars cruise the streets dropping god knows what. Close to 500,000 houses with their acres of iron roof, acres of concrete drive and the cities asphalt roads concentrate water very quickly into storm drains and the the whole shebang sinks into the harbour(s). Lets count the acres of fertilised land adjacent to Auckland and the excess nutrients abound in your waters too. Not forgetting the dairy runoff being dumped via the Waikato and Piako rivers.

It is not surprising that algae blooms, puffer fish or slugs congregate around the area. Nature is poisonous as well. It is a tried and true survival trick. Welcome.

The place can't be clean, will never be clean and will never be the pristine hydro playground the settlers found. ....ever.

So, mitigate is all we can do. Unless sanity prevails and NZ finally understands that letting a city grow at the rate Auckland has for the last 50 years was suicidal. Far better to spread the population out around the country.

An isthmus is a stupid place to plonk 2 or 3 million people. Period.

    Its not too late.

  • Southerly: I Was Dissed By Three Old Ladies,

*555 - Hello, I would like to report a case of littering....yes, littering...Sumner....on the promenade....A little lady...could be old, yes...old....three of them in a car....FGR564...Why have I called?...because I want to make sure that when I pick up the litter and walk over to the car to give it back to her that my call is being recorded for posterity and any impending assault case....Here we go....(trot,trot trot)....Good morning madam, I think you dropped this. I would like to give it back to you. Pardon, Madam?...$%^##$@#$$%$@...Oh, I see...I am placing it through the window....now....She is opening the door and coming towards me.....she is bringing the litter with her...she has thrown it at my face....I have picked it up again and put in through the window of the car....her 'friends' have got out of the car and are coming towards me....all three of them? ....yes Sir...What should I do?....leave them?....alone?.....Oh..you have heard of them huh?....who are they?.....The Riccarton Sows? Oh ha ha...sounds like they are the pick of the litter.....

What is scary is that these little old ladies were probably (amongst others) bikie girls years ago...well...not that many years ago and they could be the first of a wave of THAT youth reaching THIS age....Jeez...great!

  • Hard News: Where your money goes,

    Sorry Mathew

Re Fire Service. I meant that a similar service should/could be set up for Helicopter Rescues rather than under the umbrella of the NZFS. Acronym selection NFG.

  • Hard News: Where your money goes,

I knew Malcolm Beattie from my school surf days at Port Waikato. The article is right. he got things done. he called a spade an effing shovel and he moved things to make things happen. There was no denying that he was passionate about rescue that is for sure.

But the crux of the whole shinnannigans was how on earth have we allowed organisations such as the rescue helicopter service(s) around the country to have to beg for funds to keep going?

I agree that these services should be available throughout the country and yes, there have been operators who have pushed the boundaries to get themselves into the ACC handout. But a national servicee (aka Fire Service) would a useful addition to the country surely.

The issue of the cut from the charity funds for "non-charity" purposes needs clarifying and more and more we are seeing the creaming of funds.

The nasty bit is, would charities even get the amount they actually get to spend "in the right place" without the marketing? THAT is the balancing question and I suspect that the marketers themselves probably do the convincing on that one.
