  • Southerly: The Problem With Religion,

Isn't there some cat called Dick Dawkins who makes a living carrying on about it?

Last I heard he was an evolutionary biologist and author and made his living doing that. He did write on book specifically about religion.
"Makes a living carrying on about it" is as an inaccurate statement as one could make about his profession.
And anyway I was hoping you would dish the dirt on PA's most vociferous atheists.

It was the only sect of non-believers at University that I can remember had their own club about it, and regularly gave Christians airtime and a pulpit in loud debates,

Ya see there's yer problem, university debating clubs are just an excuse to get pissed and all the loudness was just built up thirst waiting to be sated. Not real life at all. Oh Wait.....

Many Thanks David (is it David or Dr?) didnt want to derail a thread.

and don't even go to Church.

How do you know they are christian?
Do they pray prior to the christmas gorgefest.

my co-workers are Mormons and I never even knew.

Heard of Mr Deity? The creator was raised Mormon, he's very funny talking about his childhood.

Yes, the atheists we hear from most often.

Oooo Who are they, pray tell?

but from the way they talk they're just the same as anyone else,

Damn, I was sure they grew horns.
    Um thats a joke.....

  • Southerly: The Problem With Religion,

There is nothing inherent in atheism which requires removing belief from other people, though some atheists do behave like that.

Gee Hope you werent thinking of me when you wrote that.
    But if you were...
I don't want to remove belief in gods.
I would prefer people just to give up on it.
It will be a long process unfortunately.
    Um solar water heaters......?

Touchdown had a horrifying record during the reality show boom.

Or Unscripted Television as Julie Christie has taken to calling it now.

  • Southerly: The Problem With Religion,

A wicked thought: surely atheism is the most definite advocate of this particular view, in our day?

And yet, it took you, a presumably well educated person, to utter this superficial and inane statement.

    Oh Boy and again...

applies to *all* religious positions, including "secularism" and "atheism",

  • Southerly: The Problem With Religion,

whenever one feels tempted to say that all this religion has ever done is suppress science.

"Religion" wants to impose a status quo of its own reckoning. Anything that doesn't fit is excluded. I suppose that may be where any suppression may arise. Also its hierarchy targets people, its very personal.
    Anyway enough apologia.

I read somewhere, Dr Haywood, you have some knowledge of alternative technologies.
Glass evacuated tube solar water heating, your thoughts?

"I do not greet them with icy rejection... because I know they've had icy rejection from every other house in the street, and I feel terribly, terribly sorry for them."

I feel sorry for them too, as I would for anyone who has imposed this on themselves.
Like the sound of your Grandfather.

Thanks for the compliment on my spelling skills, I'll go away and work on my comprehension skills.

  • Southerly: The Problem With Religion,

I should mention at this point that I very much dislike people being rude to religious believers -- because it makes me feel compelled to be polite by way of balance.

Balance? How do you know the scales are tipped in such a way that you must be polite? Or are you compensating for your grandfather?
Anyway very British of you, tho' some of those clever British atheists have come up with a word to describe you. Accommodationist.
Maybe you could open a hotel.

Of course, it's not very nice to poke fun at sincerely-held religious beliefs,

So if a person sincerely believes inoculation causes mental problems in kids? Dont poke fun?
What is important here? Is it the sincerely held, or religious part?
Sorry this is just an personal unexamined opinion. But it is a blog.
    Have a nice day.

  • Hard News: Climate science and the media,

In my mind, the greatest challenge facing scientists is the mammoth task of somehow making the general public grasp that while nothing is certain, and nothing is as simple as it seems, that doesn't make it all totally garbage.

False certainty and faux simplicity............and the general public.
Well, when the All Blacks lose at the World Cup next year, that earth shattering event might lay the ground work for you, um, in New Zealand.
Cant offer any suggestions for the rest of the world.
