  • Random Play: Diana of Wails: The…,

Diana's death: I was at a flower show near Western Springs with my sister, and the news was suddenly announced over the PA just after the presentation of prizes. A lot of very shocked, tearful old folk that day.

  • Hard News: Brimful on the 45,

I'm far too young to have cred in this Battle of Obsolete Computer Memories. My family didn't get a computer until 1997, and it was a P200 from Kingsland Computers - complete with handheld scanner, a chunky 4.3 gig of hard drive space, and Lotus SmartSuite 97 in place of MS Office. We hung on to it until 2004.

  • Cracker: Poke Me, Bite Me, Add Me,

Just in case people didn't spot it before: here's an essay by danah boyd which looks mainly at the Facebook Feed, but also lots of other interesting little issues around social networking sites. Worth a (re)read.

  • Cracker: Poke Me, Bite Me, Add Me,

Facebook's transformation has really kicked off because all of those third-party applications are being tossed around.

I signed up last year and became quite fond of its relative simplicity, but now I'm having to refuse endless requests from friends to sign up to new applications which will just clutter up my profile. As Damian points out, it's so much worse because all that the programs do is require more actions from your friends, who in turn require more actions from you... and the whole thing steams towards the point where people stop using the program because it's so annoying.

  • Island Life: Books are our friends,

I think the best strategy for pulling with books is to doll yourself up in the traditional way, then wrap a blank cover around whatever you're reading (in Japanese style, where people habitually buy these covers to conceal their literary choice on the subway). Fellow passengers' curiosity will take you a long way.

People may also have heard of the My Penguin series, which are classics with a blank front cover for artists to decorate. Possibilities:

    1) Leave it blank and rely on curiosity
    2) Show off your artistic style and actually decorate it while in public, then give it to your target as a gift - with your phone number inside the cover. ;)

  • Island Life: Are you old enough?,

    I lol'd.

And it's all so true, in that special satirical meaning of the word.
