She's less than thrilled at the prospect of the recovery taking months at least and perhaps a year or more. Does anyone have any useful advice to offer?

Sadly, everything I hear about frozen shoulder is that it's a waiting game.

But ... at the risk of being shouted at again, a clinical trial last year at a British hospital (published in the British Journal of Rheumatology) seemed to indicate symptom relief in 80% of patients from one particular OMT technique.

And BBC Health's review doctor endorsed osteopathy as a treatment.

How many news channels screening wall to wall Michael Jackson necrophilly do you really need?

Good question. Access to the big-brand news channels is occasionally handy, but I'm getting most of my US cable news online anyway, most of the time.

And the sad fact is that no one in the local TV environment has -- or can get -- a consistently good bouquet of contemporary documentaries (ie: docos that aren't five years old). That's what the internet is for ...

Which isn't poles apart from your story of your wife's experience where she had an issue, went to see an osteopath, and since then it's been fine.

But your underlying assumption is that she got some form of magical faith healing. Gio's wife was treated and given exercises to practice at home, and her previously immutable symptoms eased.

Different intervention, but same result leading to the belief that the intervention was in some way responsible.

By the sound of it, I don't think it's entirely irrational to suppose it wasn't mere coincidence.

I just don't think it's all that irrational to think that a practice that began with a kooky theory evolved over a century of clinical experience into a hands-on physical therapy that seems to do some good, when there's both anecdote and medical research to support the idea.

I apologise for being rude and patronising. Please be assured it was never the intention at all.

    Apology accepted.

Finally, I was the shooting coach for the NZ Paralympic Shooting team in Athens.

Yikes. Ghastly story. I've never even thought of going to a chiropractor actually.

But I was osteopathically treated by Kristy Milliken, of the NZ (able-bodied) cycling team. She's very strong ...

Also, Jeremy, who on earth will sign up for Sky just to get prime in digital?

I think that by the time the year's out, Prime will be on Freeview. Jonathan Coleman is leaning on Sky, I gather.

Oh I'm not conflating them at all. Just contrasting the reactions to the two, which are completely opposite, when people seem to be indicating that the evidence (or lack of) for both is not poles apart.

Uh, I think you just conflated them ...

And, yet again, the meta-analysis from PubMedCentral on the NIH website does actually say this:

    Conclusion

OMT significantly reduces low back pain. The level of pain reduction is greater than expected from placebo effects alone and persists for at least three months. Additional research is warranted to elucidate mechanistically how OMT exerts its effects, to determine if OMT benefits are long lasting, and to assess the cost-effectiveness of OMT as a complementary treatment for low back pain.

Perhaps there's something amiss with the study. But it it does seem to match my experience. That's all.

You bet. Which SKY channel will Media7 screen on? And when?

TVNZ 7 will be on Channel 97 on Sky, up there with the news and documentary channels. Media7 will screen at 9.10pm on Thursday, and several times thereafter.

It seems to me quite plausible that a practiced masseur with good anatomical training and a nice manner can get real and repeatable results with back and joint pain no matter what theory is used to explain their techniques.

Quite. That's exactly my view of it. What annoys me is the idea that I'm some dupe who hasn't thought about the issue. I have.

And, as I noted, it's not even as if there isn't medical research that supports the idea that I, Gio's wife and Islander are actually gaining objective relief from symptoms as a result of the treatment (which in my case has largely been skilled soft-tissue massage). Trying to conflate it with faith healing is just building a straw man.
