  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

OK, maybe I should give another go but 2.5 hours was too damn long. I wanted to come away with a better opinion of the current state of Hollywood film but I didn't--my attitude probably hardened when I passed by publicity for the next 3-D extravangaza--a bloody film about talking dogs! Maybe the Scott Pilgrim movie will change things.

On a completely different topic from this fascinating discussion: any opinions of Inception? I had high hopes for it but walked out half-way through--couldn't stand the overly-expository dialogue ("We are going to do this---and then we are going to do that...and hope it all works..") as well as the gratuitous car smashes and gunfire.

Introducing people in formal settings can be a trial. I still squirm when I recall how I introduced the guest spreaker at a conference as The Honorary Steve Maharey instead of The Honourable... What made it worse was that he had to go and correct me!

  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

Thus the need for name badges/labels at all Great Blends, with an addendum next time along the lines of Hi, I am able to converse on the following topics.....?

  • Southerly: Confessions of a Social Retard,

A nice story, David, but you don't convince me. When we met at the last Great Blend your conversational count outnumbered mine--but I did notice you kept a doorway within reach, as an escape route ;-)

I think it is a good thing that when you have to talk in public to large crowds (which I do nearly every day), it is good if you still ask yourself, 'Who is this person?' Incidentally, I am doing a pecha kucha thing tomorrow night and although I know the rules about images (20x20=6min 40sec), I am not sure about the number of words you can use. I suspect occasional silences would be good. Any advice?

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

I don't feel quite the same, for some strange reason.

Oh, well. There is consolation in the ABs win tonight ;-)

It might be my second diversion of the day but you do have to love it when Waikato beats Auckland (21-18, after the final hooter)

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

Not to divert the discussion but whilst we are speaking of other good things , I have just been reading about the success of The Best Party in the recent mayoral elections in Reykjavik. The new mayor (Jon Gnarr), in addition to pledging free towels in public swimming pools, refuses to do business with anyone who hasn't watched all five seasons of The Wire

  • Hard News: My Mum and other good things,

petchakutcha I think you misspelled "Pikachu".

I think it is Pecha Kucha. I am doing my first ever PK on Tuesday night and it is a little daunting--constructing a 6 minute story around 20 slides. Mine is titled 'Mary Who? Einstein in Hollywood'; about Albert Einstein's 1931 visit to Hollywood (he was introduced to Mary Pickford and didn't know who she was) and is all about the scientist-as-celebrity, based on a article in a 1931 issue of Photoplay magazine (which my lovely daughter found for me in the local Browser's Bookshop)

A lovely story about your mother, Russell. My mother died a few year back, aged 90something (we don't know exactly how many years, as she regularly changed dates on her records!); still dyeing her hair and having boyfriends in her 80s!
