  • Hard News: Prospects,

Actually, you know, its almost a bit of a relief to have the boot on the other foot now. After putting up with the pious hypocrisy of the right it's time for us to go get the Jon Stewart in us all from under the dusty tarp in the shed where it has been for the last nine years and start dishing it out to the right.

    Labour in 2011 starts now!

  • Hard News: Prospects,

I expect to see a mass exit of certain political journalists - Guyon Espiner (the gloating little shit) and Sean Plunket amongst the leaders of the charge - into fat pay packets as comms advisors with various National ministers.

Helen has stood down as leader of the Labour Party.

For a now at least the vindictive and boorish in our natures is in ascendant, and they've got their tall poppy scalp. Helen Clark has been a PM of the ages, probably the best since Frazer, and she will be long remembered.

I count myself lucky to have spent nine years with her as our prime minister.

  • Hard News: Prospects,

I watched Roger Douglas before, fuck I had forgotten just what a nasty piece of work he is. If Key is a centrist, I give it six months before ACT implodes between Rodney's baubles and Douglas's doctrinaire fantasies.

If John turns out to be in bed with the right of his party and tries to let Rogernomes loose on the manufactured crisis pretext, National will govern for three years out of the next 15.

It is only a 5% swing to the Nats, and after nine fantastic years it is time to sit back and enjoy watching the RWNJ's turn on Key and co.

With the world the world is going economically, 5% seems very doable for the left in 2011.

Oh and looking at the Auckland results, the Herald effect is pretty clear. They may have got the result they wanted, but I hope Tim Murphy thinks about the cost to his papers credibility. With any luck APN will close it down to save money and leave Auckland with the freebies who at least don't pretend to be what they are not.

Here is a question - anyone know what is happening in the Rimutaka electorate? How rich would it be for Winston to get back in on Ron Mark's back!

  • Hard News: Prospects,

I voted today - I am busy tomorrow so I am not sure if I'll have time.

Two thoughts after voting at AUT.

1/ I queued for 40 minutes to vote. I was outraged, and 30 minutes into the wait I pulled out my piece of voting paper and made a call to the chief returning officier and asked the lovely who answered if she considered 40+ minutes acceptable??? She said no, and she would dispatch reinforcements post-haste to the polling station.

What a wonderful country we live in, no queueing for hours like the disgraceful system in the USA, and a disgruntled citizen can whip out his mobile and phone the chief returning officer direct to organise reinforcements.

2/ Given that with special voting and hui and coalition forming etc etc forming a government takes a reasonably liesurely amount of time, who do we just have a single voting day? Why can't we vote over a weekend? Apparently the ealry voting thing was a raging success in the US election.

  • Hard News: History is now,

There is no redeeming himself by changing the Republican Party. McCain is 72 years old, a failed candidate for president and at the end of the road.

More likely is Sarah Palin, who is far more attuned to the evangelical base like Bush was, being promoted as the Republican hope. Lets face it - the GOP is more likely to blame the "centrist" McCain for losing than it is to look in the mirror and see the hate filled party of resentment it has become.

Barbara - I subscribe to a theory that holds the Great War to have been a cultural and moral cataclysm that it's most affected participants have never really recovered from.

"...I thought McCain and Obama made powerful speeches about reconciliation for all Americans.I wonder if McCain is already been offered a role in the Obama camp....just putting it out there..."

No, Americans all seem to have a not to latent idealism about the unifying idea of the American dream.

It what makes them so different from us, I think culturally we lost that idealism of our imperial dream - blown to muddy smithereens on the Somme and at Passchendaele - never to be recovered.
