  • Hard News: Dial O for Obama,

    And it goes on:

In the latest instance of inflammatory outbursts at McCain-Palin rallies, a crowd member screamed "treason!" during an event on Tuesday after Sarah Palin accused Barack Obama of criticizing U.S. troops.

These people are getting quite scary.

  • Hard News: Dial O for Obama,

That seemed to set the scene, and those of you who don't use your real names (and I understand the varied reasons for that) still respect the guidelines and the atmosphere here.

I've always been surprised by how little I've had to moderate. The odd word in someone's ear, a few posts deleted or edited, and (I think) five people banned in two years. Which is brilliant, really.

Slightly early, but Happy 2nd birthday PAS!

Thanks! I'm always the last one to remember these things. But I am summoning the tribe together next month for feasting and merriment ...

  • Hard News: Dial O for Obama,

I trust Mr Brown doesn't object to the suggestion he's to the left of centre...

Not at all. On the other hand, I'm orthodox economically, have long argued for trade liberalisation, etc, so the labels only go so far. It would be safe to say that I'm socially liberal as all-get-out ...

I might not always agree with Craig, but I can respect his political philosophy. I can see why people venerate Margaret Thatcher, even though I drank two bottles of champagne the glorious day she was bundled out of office.

I got used to being assailed as a filthy lefty by Kiwiblog crazies, but I was startled one day to be browsing the forums on Trade Me and discover that I was "an extreme Marxist". I think at the time I was already a company director and writing an award-winning column for a business magazine ...

I really only gets bothersome when it starts to threaten my livelihood, as was the case with Deborah Coddington's absurd "Saving Public Radio" report, which also denounced Rod Oram as a dangerous left-wing influence. And I made it clear to John Drinnan what I thought about his angle on me hosting Media7 (which might have been summarised as "Labour lickspittle gets taxpayer-funded soapbox in election year shock"). That does piss me off.

  • Hard News: Dial O for Obama,

Russell: do you have a topic for next week as I could add a Media 7 rercording to a book launch in Auckland next Tuesday?

As things stand, we're looking at the crime-and-the-media topic. It'd be great if you could join us. The recordings start at about 7pm, but we'd need you there by 6.30.

At the risk of offending our host, I'd really like it if a centre-right version of PAS were to start up but I can't see it happening.

That would be cool. I can't join a discussion at Kiwiblog without receiving direct, personal abuse these days, and it would be nice if there was a place to go and discuss ideas with a different crowd.

I do think it reflects poorly on DPF that he allows so much idiocy to persist. Some of his most prolific commenters are also the most unpleasant.

  • Hard News: Dial O for Obama,

I've loaded the Winston Peters app. It throws out all the Asian components so the phone doesn't work.

You say my phone is part of the Gathering Asian Component Tide? Should I send some of it back?

Does anyone think a cash bribe will fix it?

I think I already paid that to Vodafone.

08 Wire does its own take on the PREFU and takes a look at Farrar vs Standard on crime stats, with more argument about the ethics of implying your opponent doesn't care about rape in the comments. I do despair a bit sometimes.

Reading the latest comments, it appears that I, too, am now an enemy of the left.

    Sigh ...

  • Field Theory: I suppose you could call…,

Believe me, I'm no fan of Auckland and I take great delight that they aren't in the finals. But what kind of system allows a 4-6 team into the post-season ahead of a 5-5 team?

The weird thing was that Auckland's QF chances came down to Gus Collins' call on what to do with that last-minute penalty. He apparently wavered and almost had the ball kicked out, but then called for the penalty goal that deprived Auckland of a bonus point and killed their season.

Or, perhaps, put their season out of its misery. For me personally the irony is that I'm always banging on about how I'd go to lots of games if they had daytime kick-offs. Then this year they do - thanks to the floodlights being down for the reconstruction -- and it turns out the bloody team isn't worth the bother.

Do you just mean on TV?
We locals have been being educated by our local paper.

And we have the editor on the panel. But this has been going on for years, and we'll talk about why.

  • Hard News: Citizens,

__You were being ironic, some people aren't...__

There's a cheery bunch of folks:

Oh, you clearly missed the Herald's 'Your Views' around the time of the South Auckland killings. That got really mediaeval, really quickly.

My producer was flicking through it and made a crack about sharia law. And the next page he clicked actually had someone proposing that thieves should have their hands cut off ...

The latent violence amongst upstanding citizens can be quite a thing to behold.
