  • Hard News: Another nail in the coffin of…,

I read in the listener how he'd spend days sifting through vinyl and wearing out needles to get just the right moment of hi-hat sizzle to sample... so yah might be right about the samples/synthesis, but I don't think haines would reliinquish control of his music...

  • Island Life: More time with the family,

A remarkable number of teachers (at least in primary schools) agree with this. In fact I had a conversation along these lines with one of my kid's teachers yesterday. Tho... it IS a chance to keep up with the kid's schoolwork.

  • OnPoint: The Master Plan,

True, it took a while! Brash wasn't keen on the change of target, but that wasn't exactly the full story. He did resign. Maybe 'got rid of' is wrong, but hm, I don't think it's completely wrong!

  • OnPoint: The Master Plan,

You've said that Cullen/Labour have stuck with the RBA, but I think rather crucially, they eased the Bank's target from 0-2 to 1-3% and got rid of Dr Brash- whose tenure in control of the RB was not marked by rapid growth.
I've talked to a few business people who reckon Brash killed sparks like a vigilant firefirghter. One said he had his boot on the economy's throat, and any sign of life, he stomped down hard. Brash- and the RBA- certainly got inflation down, from a runaway level.
But easing up from 0-2 (and getting rid of Brash) came at a moment when commodity prices took off- and there was plenty of (relatively) cheap credit to be had. It was like adding just a little petrol to the fire. I think that was something Cullen pondered deeply in opposition, and it seemed to help significantly.

  • Island Life: It's the way you tell them,

Appreciated, tho. Jolissa. The way music works behind the bonnet is fascinating, and you've really pinged that one! (With a few extemporisations in a related key, heh)

  • Hard News: Another Big Day,

It got to the NYT editors though- who have already endorsed Clinton.
I'm impressed with Michelle Obama, too. How can a family handle that much rhetorical flair? Personally, I prefer to be inspired after breakfast- or at least a coffee...

  • Hard News: Another Big Day,

Which seems to have made it to the frontpage of obama.com. California here we come. It's truely a great competition.

  • Hard News: Another Big Day,

Hilary could take out McCain; in an odd way she's a better candidate than she looks! and I think the long campaign might reveal that. But despite having no McCredibility, gotta agree that Obama can be seriously inspiring- and that the US- and the world- could do with a ig shot of that.
    Eg, check out this video.

  • Hard News: Herself's Turn,

    Hi Geoff.
I hope I don't come across as too much of a snarling mongrel.
The figure of 76% came from a management ahem, briefing powerpoint. I think Iceland was next, on 72%. But I don't know what the definition of tertiary study was.
The meeting was looking at strategic positioning for the university. What students we wanted to attract, where the demographics were moving, class sizes, with a marketing perspective. There was considerable discussion of capping numbers and the implications around that.
It's a striking number, but googling around I can't find any data on those numbers at all- let alone confirmation. NOt even sure where to start looking.
