    "I don't think so"? Bit under-emphatic, surely..

I think there's a difference between vigour and inept crappiness..

And I found Carnivale brilliant but yes, slow. Would work well on DVD I imagine but couldn't possibly comment on other ways of encountering it.

  • Hard News: Flu diversions,

I ADORED The Tomorrow People when it was first shown. But i strongly suspect I would cringe if i saw it again after all these years

With you on that, Mr Ashby. I remember proudly enticing my parents to watch Stingray with me, and only realising how naff it was while they were politely enduring it. I guess it might have some kitsch value by now, but I suspect Tomorrow People never will.

Matthew, do you really think that what is legal is what will be implemented or enforced? Regardless of whether that article I linked to earlier is totally credible in its conclusions, it provides at least one local example where it seems there was a significant difference between what was signed off and what was delivered.

Devolution of disability services for over-65 year olds to DHBs has a similar gap between what Cabinet explicitly agreed to and what their agents have quietly got away with since - which is why I'm more inclined to believe that the Privacy Commissioner's concerns about the photo drivers licenses have some grounds.

I wouldn't go putting all my faith in our comparatively uncorrupt bureacracy just yet. That lack of corruption ironically makes it easy for a determined person of scant morals to cause a lot of damage.

  • Speaker: Database Nation,

many of these systems currently archive footage that has no use today in the hope that future tech will make it much more useful

This article has a suspiciously conspiracist tone, but it's an interesting take on the potential future purpose of our own local photo drivers license - remember how the flash seemed a bit brighter than usual when they took your photo?:

Although never publicly admitted, direct and circumstantial evidence shows that the type of digitised images to be produced were Visionics/ Polaroid FaceIt Facial Recognition images for national, de facto ID cards. The specialised cameras acquired, if used in conjunction with a software package developed by Visionics Corporation, are capable of measuring the geometric makeup of a person's face...i.e. the distance from the tip of the nose to the chin, the width of the brow or distance between the eyes. This form of identification imagery, using mathematical algorithms, is as effective as a fingerprint in the identification of individuals. Anyone so photographed can be positively identified in a crowd by special surveillance cameras.
