  • Hard News: Too Good to Be True,

I was watching him on TV last night and I couldn't really figure out where he was coming from - he'd quit his job as a cop last year and is now spending his own money to do this - cops don't make that much money - it all smelled a bit fishy to me,

As I noted, he's not spending his own money -- he's providing community cover for pokie operators. The fact that not one journalist has actually asked him about the contradiction is sad but hardy surprising.

He also charges corporates for "advice". What annoys me is that he touts himself as having done "research". He hasn't. He's transcribing stuff from interested organisations in the US. Someone should call him on that too ... but I'm not holding my breath.

I figure it's election year and he's a stalking horse for someone - I bet now that the govt's sort of dismissed him he'll jump into the lap of another political party

    Oh, he's very political.

That said, I was impressed with the advertising by Montana Meth Project, but having spoken to those who have used P, most of them didn't think it would have any effect... it might scare soccer moms, but it don't actually stop consumption....

And it won't be of any use to anyone in the real world in recognising P problems for themselves or their friends. I've known a couple of people who lost the plot on methamphetamine -- neither of them got within miles of the Montana horror scenarios. Virtually nobody does.

As their own research told them, the horror imagery is seen as exaggerated by the target audience. The danger is that they think the danger in general is therefore exaggerated.

It is, of course, extremely expensive but I am just pointing out that your sentence is incorrect (unless you are referring to urine tests, in which case you are correct)

Yes, I was referring to urine testing, which is the only form of screening anyone has seriously proposed for schools.

How can we be expected to vote for politicians whose spin and self-promotion is so slow? If they can't handle their own self-aggrandising, whichever-the-wind-blows PR (which is after all their primary skill set) surely they are not capable of running the country.

It's all about experience. Helen Clark wouldn't have tarried with defending the quite possibly defensible the way the tyro Ms Street did -- she'd have tossed the nearest available CEO under the bus before morning tea.

I trust the junior minister has learned her lesson.

Oh apologies, I didn't realise this blog was only for like minded liberals

It's not. But I suggest you stop purporting to be someone you're not.

I have a problem with a funding organisation being one mans vision.

Your problem is that you believe that.

No, Maryan Street got fed to the Omnibus of Doom by the Minister of State Services and the Prime Minister.

    She sure did. Brutal.

Actually, that one, a "one night retreat" under a different CEO five years ago, does look like somebody taking the piss.

    6. Maryan Street didn't throw HNZC's CEO under the bus and loudly sound off about demanding explanations, having accepted that there wasn't much to explain.

Okay, scratch that. Street has now (having presumably had a visit from the damage-control mandarins) changed tack and said the conference was "not a good look".

She doesn't really believe it was outrageous, National doesn't really believe it was outrageous and the journalists reporting on it don't believe it either. But everyone has to pretend ...

    This drives me nuts.

D'you reckon, what with the Bailey Kurariki beat-up, that "luxury" is this year's word?

OK, if you'll pay Kate Wilkinson the same courtesy and say she's been on the receiving end of a "beat up" quite explicitly and gleefully driven by Trevor Mallard. That would be utter bullshit as well, but fair's fair.

At least there was something at stake in the Kiwisaver whoopsie.

    But really ...

    1. The conference appears to have had a serious purpose; to present and discuss a new set of practices

    2. It was pulled off with remarkable economy

    3. There is no comparison with the WINZ debacle, which cost four times as much, even without adjusting for inflation.

    4. The place isn't actually as flash as everyone has been cracking on.

    5. HNZC actually does do all those fancy things like videoconferencing.

    6. Maryan Street didn't throw HNZC's CEO under the bus and loudly sound off about demanding explanations, having accepted that there wasn't much to explain.

All we're left with here is the idea that HNZC should have found somewhere much crappier for its staff to go at a similar price, so it wouldn't "look bad'.

And the only reason a perfectly conventional national conference "looks bad" is that the reef-fish who report politics have transcribed Phil Heatley's press release (much easier than finding their own stories) and thus told us it looks bad.

I've actually been getting more steamed up about this as the day has gone on. As might be apparent ...
