  • Hard News: Assault by Monstrous,…,

I'm sick of all the complaints that the stadium design looks like a condom/haemorrhoid cushion/donut.

I mean, it's a round structure with a hole in the middle. Of course it's going to resemble other round things with holes in the middle.

We as humans don't think that round things with holes in the middle are inherently ugly (c.f. the mouth), and I don't see why the stadium should be considered ugly because of this reason.

As far as buildings that resemble things goes, some say the Sky Tower looks like a hypodermic needle (does it really?), but that hasn't stopped it from turning into a loved icon of Auckland.

I am just hoping against hope that no one has any copies of Gloss out there, they would just look so horid today. Vintage 80s Auckland Yuppies+ shoulder pads mmmm

But that sort of stuff is in retro vogue now. If Gloss was rerun, the 16-year-olds of today would probably really be into it for all the same reasons it would make their parents cringe.

I'm jonesing for the episode where Maxine's hat was so wide she declared that double doors were needed for her office, and also the one where Push Push made a guest appearance.

Oh, and the season one (I think) finale where Miranda Harcourt's character kills herself by mournfully wading out into the ocean.

Ok, I declare a need for this to be released on DVD.

  • OnPoint: Bar brawls aren't my thing,

I haven't necessarily been following this debate, but having just read the Herald on Sunday column, it seems to be that Coddington is really really bothered but all the flack she's getting over this.

Despite her dissing of blogs, her column reads like a slightly moderate version of an angry blog entry written in response to some blogospheric tiff (and I don't mean that as an insult).

  • OnPoint: Bar brawls aren't my thing,

What exactly is this "PC Brigade"? Seems to me that those who expose or fight the biases and prejudices of right-wing conservatives are branded "PC" and dismissed out of hand without answering any of the questions raised by them.

This reminds me of Ben Elton's definition of politically correct - someone who's more left-wing than you.

  • Kiwi: An animation,

In an interview with Dony Permedi, the animator, he says that he was originally going to make the bird a chicken, but switched to a kiwi because chickens are pretty common in cartoons.

But by making the bird a kiwi, it's given it a whole extra layer of meaning to New Zealanders. We don't just see a flightless bird or a flightless bird that could be a human - we see a flightless bird that represents the very essence of what it means to be a New Zealander.

Would it have the same resonance to capital-K Kiwis if the bird was a chicken or a penguin?

  • Hard News: Only rock 'n' roll,

I can't work out how these guys decide which bands are in competition for the world's best.

    From the Wikipedia entry:

The World Music Awards (founded in 1989) is an international awards show that annually honors recording artists based on their popularity, and worldwide sales figures

So that pretty much explains it. Lowest common denominator.

Carmen and Guy were magic on Shortland Street. They were probably the best Shorty couple ever, and I think 2 People was an attempt at carrying on their chemistry post-Shortland Street. But sadly...

But to Healey and Parker's credit, the worst thing about this clip is the theme song. The opening titles cabaret version of Mi-Sex's "People" is surely the worst thing ever to fall into the category of New Zealand music.

  • Hard News: Only rock 'n' roll,

I have the Someday/Remind split on mp3. Every now and then it comes up on shuffle on my iPod and I always listen to it because it brings me such pleasure.

The funny thing is that I can absolutely tolarate "How you remind me", but yet "Someday" makes me feel ill, so even though both songs have the same structure, there's something else going on that means they're not total clones.

  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

I'm not buying the argument that the stadium is a bad thing because it looks like a haemorrhoid cushion, flat tyre or a donut.

The Sky Tower is considered by some to resemble a hypodermic needle, and yet it hasn't made Auckland or New Zealand the laughing stock of anywhere. (Unlike the Big Donger observation tower in Newcastle, NSW?)

That one in Wellington is called the Cake Tin, and yet no one is refusing to play there on the grounds that cake tins should stay in the kitchen along with the women.

Even the glorious Sydney Opera House has been described as "nuns in a scrum."

Can we just accept that no matter what the stadium's design is, it will resemble something else, probably with comedic undertones?

  • Speaker: Picnic at Hyde Park Corner,

I wouldn't consider myself a Dave Dobbyn fan, but, like, how awesome was it that he got to sing these lines in front of the Queen and Tony Blair?

    Out here on the edge
the empire is fading by the day
and the world is so weary in war
maybe we’ll find that new way
