"Sapphire and Steel" scared me shitless. The one with the person with no face - after I saw that, I used to go outside and play while S&S was on. I could not bear to be in the house while such televisual horror was happening.
I loved "Under The Mountain". I remember "Rachel, Theo, heeeeelp!", the slimy tunnels the Wilberforces travelled along, and the triumphant finale with the powerful arcs of red and blue light stretching between Mt Eden and Rangitoto. "Go down, creatures of the mud!"
And I also remember "Children of Fire Mountain". It was a kidult series set in colonial times and it involved some Maori and Pakeha children, a village and a volcano. Um, I guess my main memory of that is the rousing orchestral theme tune. I'd like to see that on You Tube.
But I do know one thing - all these old TV shows are never as good as you remember them. The production values look awful and the plotting seems painfully slow.
TV today may seem rubbish, but it's unexpectedly more sophisticated and competent than its equivalents in the past.

Could someone explain how to put urls into posts if html isn't enabled. The instructions to the left of the 'post a reply' box are too cryptic for me.
It's easier than it looks. Replace url with the link and replace text with the words you want to lead to the link.
As an example (and using curved brackets instead of square ones) to link to Google, it would look like this:
((http://www.google.com/|Google))
And remember the | between the URL and the text. Got it?

Why are all the people who win NZ Idol Christians? It's a tad worrying.

Ok, ok. I'll do the serious answer.
This was discussed over on Idol Blog about a year ago. It all comes down to singing in church. For their whole lives, rain or shine, these kids have gone to church every week and sung songs. And with weekly practice like that, they get better and better. And they're probably also used to singing in front of their congregations, so they can perform to a crowd.
So it's not much of a leap from a church to a theatre.
If you're worried, why not start a young atheists choir?

Hey, I've seen this video before!
In the '80s my dad was a manager at Telecom. I was involved with some sort of speech and drama performance evening, and Telecom Hamilton had kindly come to the party with some sponsorship for the hall rental. In exchange for that, this video was shown at the beginning of the evening.
I was probably about 12 at the time and I remember being horribly embarrassed that Dad was being really embarrassing by showing this dumb video about dumb phones in front of my friends.
But parents and kids alike werevery impressed and ooed and aahed in the right places.
And it turns out they were right - it did revolutionise business.

I'm sure the idea is that we'll all be much better behaved posting under our real names, but I can personally testify that it is possible to cause a ruckus doing things online under your real name.

The new and improved official Shortland Street website has an interesting column written by producer Jason Daniel on the subject of the cultural mix of characters.
He says:
This year we've been (somewhat tastelessly) accused of "ethnic cleansing" because Tama, Shannon, Li Mei and Huia all left the show. But five years ago when I created the Hudson family - the first complete Maori family on the show - there were outcries about "the browning of Shortland Street". So sometimes you just can't win.

I'd get a New Orleans jazz funeral. Mainly cos there's one in the opening scenes of "Live and Let Die", but surely it's a better accompaniment than "Lightning Crashes" or "Stairway to Heaven".
