This is more of Friday morning grumble than anything and so Craig please take no offence at this (yours was just the first comment I read this morning):
I have no pretensions to be any expert in any science
Then why are you offering an opinion on a scientific issue? I have no training in law and so never offer opinions on legal issues. I always yell at the TV when I hear somebody say "I'm no expert but..." If you're not an expert, don't say anything else.
The GE issues is slightly different as there are culutral issues at play as well that need addressing.
I should probably write more but I need to go and have breakfast, on which I am truly an expert.
Spanking should still be legal but what they'll have to cut out is all that "you've been a bad boy/girl" talk.
Because that would make it for "corrective purposes"
Re: Stats and Mediawatch:
I also reccommend The Answers Guy in the Wall St Journal.
And students studying arts at Uni should be forced to...
...date the science kids
dammit need to type faster!
As someone whose role is to convey (often very complex numeric) information to the public I can say that all of the training in the world cannot help you when you hand over your stuff to the media (read idiots, no offence Russell) and they rip it to bits and report whatever sells.
At a StatsNZ conference a while back veteran reporter Linda Clarke stood before the gathered statisticians and basically told them that no one in the media understood numbers nor did they have any interest to.
students studying science at university should be forced to study rhetoric
then students studying communications (rhetoric?) should be forced to study science.
ps. I thought Don Christie was funny
On the subject of pimping (sorry Martha), I'll also be selling my t-shirts at Craft 2.0
Re: Climate stuff. Wasn't there some great "idea" a while ago to pump allthe excess CO2 into the sea via giant pipelines?
I thought the figures were the exact opposite - only 1 in 3 don't accept evolution. It would be interesting to know how this compares with other countries.
Exactly 100% of Hadyn is embarassed at getting his stats backwards. RB got my sentence right for me:
only 1 in 3 don't accept evolution
And I don't believe we came from chimps because no species that's living now was descended from any other species that is living now (he says hoping that he can at least get something right today)
I coudn't let this titbit slip past:
There is a clear generational divide on the issue of evolution. Nearly two-thirds of Nexters (63%) believe humans and other living things evolved over time, while only 33% say all living creatures have existed in their present form since the beginning of time.
The only issue I have is with the words "...only 33%...". Only one in three 18-25 year old people accept the scientific fact of evolution!?! That's not an "only" statement, that's a "sadly" statement.
And while the trend shows Amnericans are getting smarter on this topic (33% is down on 39 for Xers, 46 for Boomers and 45 for Seniors), it's still a bloody big number.
peace out (reprazentin' the Xers)
