  • Feed: Meals for Me,

I tell people that my go-to meal for dining alone is a can of tuna and a multivitamin, but I can exclusively reveal to you, dear PASers, that actually I usually skip the multivitamin.

  • Hard News: How do you sleep?,

For me, the content of what I'm consuming in the evenings seems to matter a fair bit. Current events (in any format) are highly likely to rile me up, so I have stopped watching or reading news at night. This seems to have been beneficial. The same restrictions apply to hate-reading, although obviously it would be better still to give it up entirely.

  • Hard News: How do you sleep?,

A couple of months ago I decided to try counting sleep and then spent the rest of the night trying to figure out whether I was 'watching' multiple sheep or the same sheep going round and round in circles, and if the latter, how it was getting back round to the left-hand side of my imagination without me 'seeing' it.

I think I did get to sleep eventually, but without ovine assistance.

  • Hard News: Tooled Up for Food, in reply to Lucy Stewart,

Being somewhere for 5 years is a bitch cookware-wise, though, because it’s long enough that you’d like some nice stuff to work with, but short enough (and far away enough from home) that I don’t want to pick up too many things I can’t bear to part with.

I packed up a fair proportion of my (nonelectric) cookware and took it with me, reasoning that I was not going to be in any sort of position to replace it on a graduate stipend. I’ve never regretted it. I haven’t regretted anything I packed up and took with me, actually. Wrangling multiple monitor boxes (excellent volume for linear dimension!) through the necessary succession of airports is no fun for anyone, but that just makes it more likely that you’ll cry and then they’ll feel bad for you and waive the excess baggage fees.

  • Hard News: Who else forgot to get married?, in reply to B Jones,

In my case, like so many others, referring to my name as my father's name also manages to completely erase the fact that it's ALSO MY MOTHER'S NAME. Whoops shouty.

  • Southerly: Getting There is Half the Fun, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

I could tell of my experiences of applying for a J1 visa to the US earlier this year–which involved a plague of acronyms, considerable expense and trips back and forth to Auckland.

Previous considerable expense notwithstanding, I don't necessarily recommend doing what I did, which was to rely on the emergency-only health insurance provided by my third-party sponsor and cash out my 'proper' health insurance allowance instead of spending it on insurance. It did result in savings, just like my projections said it would, but knowing you're underinsured is a constant small worry. Like having a stone in your shoe. For a year.

(This has been Oh Yeah I've Had That Visa: Part 1. I'm sure there are further parts.)

  • Hard News: Who else forgot to get married?, in reply to Richard Wain,

Of course, it’s merely trading one man’s last name (their father’s) for another.

I’d really like to see this meme go away. My birth name is mine exactly as much as my father’s is his, and for exactly the same reasons.

When are Cicer arietinum chic and when are they bourgeois? Is it all about the recipe?

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks,

Seasonality hack: cooked kale can be substituted into any recipe that calls for cooked spinach. I particularly recommend "kaleakopita".

Late-to-the-farmer's-market hack: every spinach recipe - raw or cooked - is a silverbeet (chard) recipe waiting to happen, and vice versa.
