  • Hard News: Busted editors,

Great, the wikiscanner site is down. Now what am I supposed to do all day?

Keep trying. You know you want it.

Damn, another book to buy. And I already have too many to read...

And not a short one, either ...

One interesting thing to emerge from the interview is that characters who are essentially grey men in Michael King's Penguin History emerged quite differently in Chris's book. King found them boring, Chris sees them as very interesting villains.

  • Hard News: The meaning of a Banana,

Essentially it sounds as if she didn't trust you enough and that makes perfect sense given that both of you will obviously have very different cultural conditioning.

I'm with Ben here, Charles. You almost make it look like Ben's fault for being insensitive, when the more obvious interpretation is that this young woman made unwarranted assumptions. I don't doubt that she did feel she would be seen as a "silly Chinese slut" in mixed company, but surely it's quite sad that she would think that.

It wasn't as if it was a risky offer from a stranger - it was a genuine extension of hospitality from her boyfriend's friend. If Ben had turned down a dinner invitation from a local family in China on the basis that his "cultural conditioning" was different than theirs, he'd look like a chump, wouldn't he?

Beside the point though; I think the original comment was misread. Anjum commented on the annoying flak from her own ethnic community ...

And from what I understand she's had flak that goes some way beyond annoying.

The bestest barbers though are in Turkey... I visited several in different regions and they were all equally good. Shampoo, condition, cut, trim with cut-throat razor, scalp massage, and most amazing.... using a little ball of burning cotton on a long stick to singe away those pesky ear hairs. Sounds frightening, looked dramatic, but really cool!

Amen. Best shave I ever had was in Turkey. Those guys give it the full welly.

I should note that the thing a real barber is good for is a shave with a cutthroat razor. There's nothing like being wrapped in a scalding towel and emerging minus a couple of layers of facial epidermis. Makes a man feel alive.

    Now ... must ... work ...

I gather that this thread has sparked a whole new round on the SkyKiwi one, which is cool. Although people still seem quite hung up on the B-word, which probably isn't so cool.

Keith's been in there posting - care to summarise, dude?

  • Southerly: In Praise of Arthur,

I've never had a lot of luck with barbers. There was the clumsy git who slipped me a sixpence to make up for cutting my ear when I was little. (I don't actually recall this, but it was a matter of family lore. And yes, it was pre-decimal currency.)

Then there was the bloke at the Smith & Caughey barbershop in 1986, who regaled me with tales of how he'd known Ringo Starr back in the old days in Liverpool, and left me with a haircut that could be characterised with the words "bizarre" and "incompetent". Given that I was about to be interviewed on Radio With Pictures, I was distraught. Ngila Dickson made a call and got me into her friend's salon at minutes' notice.

And then there was the Greek chap in Stamford Hill in London, with whom a conversation might go:

    "Is it a big one?

    "Eh?"

"New Zealand. Is it a big country?"

On my third visit he brushed his hand against my trousers in a manner such as to constitute sexual assault. Very rum chap.

My hairdresser is called Shane. He's about the same age as me and gay as all get-out. We discuss music, politics, media and life. I pay him with stolen television.

  • Random Play: The Cure -- for what ails you,

I've got a less than stellar DVD of Prince's 'Sign O' The Times' - and think RB saw one of the dates on that tour

That was the tour he cancelled, but I saw the Parade tour before that, and it was astonishing. Still a contender for the best gig I've ever seen.

But I saw him twice more after that and it was a bit less good each time ...
