  • Hard News: Friendly Fire?,

I still hold to my original theory - that someone in the leaders office working in an administrative capacity (IT support, PA, receptionist) simply burned a bunch of .pst files onto DVD, or copied them onto a USB key.

I agree. Much more likely than any spooky hacker story.

I also note that Diane Foremans apartment was broken into the night before the election. If any political dynamite was discovered then it would have been absolutely useless to Brash's political enemies: the papers would have all run to press and by the time the country found out about it on the 6 PM news the election would have been over.

As Foreman indicated, it appears that the "political enemies" were "closer to home", so they may well not have had a problem with National winning the election anyway.

One theory would be that whoever organised it considered it potentially useful to have certain information regarding the next Prime Minister. It was a pretty weird time, wasn't it?

  • Hard News: The Big Stereo Bundle,

    Yep, without whom......

Great clip. I have The way They Were, a compilation of Granada material from the punk and new wave years, which includes the full version of 'The Passenger', which you see a little of there. It's extraordinary and Iggy is sheer charisma.

  • Hard News: Evil,

Does anyone else think banning Ron was a bit harsh?

Might have been, but I don't think it was precipitate. He had been arguing on various threads for a while. There were two reasons for my decision:

    (a) I decided that he wasn't arguing in good faith. That he was behaving, in other words, as a troll.

    (b) More than one of our valued women contributors made it known to me that he was creeping them out.

I think that's the fourth time I've banned someone: there was Ross (who some people seem to think is the same person as ron); dad4justice, who is a bit scary, has real life issues and uses these discussions largely to work out his grudges; and Palm Oil Guy, a spammer who just stopped being funny.

It's not easy decision, because I do value a range of opinion, and I enjoy that opinion being vigorously expressed. But as Craig says, it's my decision to make.

And his views were swiftly countered by stronger arguments.

That's the sense in which I actually valued his presence. But there are limits.

See also, Mikaere's initial post in the Public Address System discussion of the case.

  • Hard News: The Big Stereo Bundle,

what were you doing in CHCH with students Russell? Why wasn't I informed?

Doing a 90-min info dump for students at the School of Broadcasting. I come down every year, because it's a good course and it feels worthwhile.

  • Hard News: Evil,

Stephen - he made those comments following an unsuccessful police prosecution.

But he clearly didn't regard his chums as having been tarnished at all by the prior successful police prosecution.

  • Hard News: Evil,

OK, I'm sure everyone wants to change the subject, but you might want to catch PA Radio this Saturday and catch a right-wing male who thinks Dewar's conviction was a damn good thing.

Not having heard this week's 180 Seconds when you recorded it, that post has me salivating for the full version.

  • Hard News: Evil,

I've suspended ron's account. I welcome a range of opinions here, but some people have said to me they're uncomfortable sharing a thtread with him, and, frankly, I doubt his good faith. A troll, in other words.
