  • Hard News: No Bills,

A bit too soon to be dusting off the Cromwell quote, but still good for a giggle, as novice leader learns Media Lesson One: the tape recorder is not your friend.

That's astonishing. The man's a fool. Either that or too spineless to exercise authority over his senior MPs.

I was actually quite impressed when I saw that story this morning. Not any more.

  • Island Life: Hard to swallow,

I presume this is not Mr Slack's normal luncheon, or is there some other explanation for his trim figure?

    He's on the P?

  • Hard News: A lot of money and a bit rich,

Shortland Street apparently have a specific policy of not using real-life booze brands, but are quite happy to have blatant Apples all thru the hospital.

The computers are presumably a financial deal -- that kind of placement has been a mainstay of Apple's marketing --- but I think a good deal of Shortland Street's product placements over the years have been freebies.

When I edited Planet magazine, one of our cover posters hung in the staffroom for about 18 months, and I'm not even sure that actual money would have changed hands for the prominent placement of Phoenix drinks in the early years.

Um... Tammy Davis is definitely man-candy, but Munter? Eww... that character is so much a child in a man's body it would just be wrong to want to shag him 'til his eyes popped out. :)

    But Craig, chicks dig that.

( they also raised that TVNZ got an exemption for the 1999 WRC, still no dice)

Can someone verify this? Even TV3's own story only says:

It is hardly an new issue for broadcasters – TVNZ was given an exemption by the then Broadcasting Tribunal to screen commercials on Sunday mornings for the 1984 Olympic Games.

Which is a long time ago and far away.

I can imagine that TVNZ would have been willing to take the hit because the $10m it spent on rights for the 1999 and 2003 tournaments was seen as an investment in content for the pay TV digital service it never got off the ground.

  • Hard News: The cane and the strap,

Excuse me? I did no such thing; try keeping to the topic. Beckett makes it clear that a ban on smacking or corporal punishment might may us all feel better, but it won't have the desired effect.

Bollocks he does. He addresses a specific claim regarding a fall to near-zero abuse fatalities. He actually says :

There are good arguments for banning corporal punishment. Protecting children, after all, is not just about preventing fatalities.

__So what's the rate of child assault in homes where children aren't hit at all, ron?__

That's like asking what the rate of alcoholism is in homes where people don't drink.

Yes. Thanks for making my point.

I'm sure you've read Chris Beckett's paper on the Swedish myth that a ban on corporal punishment has worked wonders. Anyway, your readers might appreciate it.

Beckett specifically addresses a claim that child maltreatment deaths in Sweden fell to almost zero after corporal punishment was banned in 1979, which he regards as unsustainable. But to adopt him as a smacking advocate -- as you, Families First, etc seem to want to do -- is ludicrous. As he says:

There are good arguments for banning corporal punishment. Protecting children, after all, is not just about preventing fatalities. But a decision on whether to introduce a ban here should be based on a realistic assessment of the pros and the cons. Let's be clear that, whatever other pros might exist, the abolition of child maltreatment deaths cannot be included among them.

And rightly so. Their views on smacking didn't have a whiff of scientific evidence behind them.

That really is a staggeringly ignorant statement.

Although no doubt these groups were afraid to bite the hand that feeds them. But to confuse smacking with child abuse really was beyond the pale. I note that the two children recently admitted to Starhip hospital, who were both allegedly abused, don't appear to have received their injuries from being smacked.

So what's the rate of child assault in homes where children aren't hit at all, ron?
