  • Hard News: From Saigon,

That's not actually the case. They're just a whole lot smarter about it than the Americans. Putting ignorant racist thugs at the airport to give travelers the third degree shows such contempt that it is more likely to inspire terrorism than stop it.

Amen. My last entry experience to the US was completely absurd (although clearly not enough to tempt me into terrorism) and LAX sucks, esoecially for transit passengers. Three hours in transit at Changi was actually fun.

I'm at the software park outside Saigon at the moment. We visited the data centre and I asked them about the reports that the fishermen who dragged up the wrong cable had all but cut off Vietnam's internet access. Total bollocks, as it happens. There are multiple interconnection points, and the earthquake in Taiwan (which is a node on the Pacific fibre loop) was actually much more of a problem for them, but even that was only transitory.

I must try and find a telecomms map of the region ...

  • Hard News: From Saigon,

It's funny how, despite being a western aligned fascist state, the Singaporeans don't seem to worry about terrerists at all.

Maybe either they think nobody well set a bomb off in Singapore, cos it's illegal, or that worst case lots of people will get killed and that will ease their overpopulation issues.

I suspect it's a bit like Dubai, which doesn't seem to have a terrorist problem either - because it suits everyone to have a business centre.

  • Yellow Peril: Asian Angst: is it time to…,

    And you have your scalp:
North & South editor Langwell resigns

    Congrats to all involved.

It's not so classy to gloat. I can imagine she's feeling pretty sad being pushed out after more than two decades. North & South was never my favourite magazine, and the Asian Angst episode has been a particularly shabby one, but there's something remarkable about staying in that kind of job so long. And they have run some good features over the years.

I'm actually pretty sure that the Press Council slamdunk isn't the reason anyway - I mean, like ACP cares.

They want to reposition the magazine to try and draw back some readers (and some younger readers) and it appears that abolishing the position of editor altogether was the only way of getting Langwell to go.

  • Hard News: Ready to Fly,

About Vietnam - my take on it was that it has to be about the most capitalist communist country on the planet

Yup, in that strange Sony-Wegas-piled-on-the-pavement sort of way.

Checked into my hotel in Ho Chi Minh City about an hour ago, and it's very, very hot and I don't have a lot of faith in the noisy AC unit's ability to get the temperature in my room down below the present 28 degrees ...

    Still, can't moan.

  • Stories: Overseas Experience,

I'm always bemused how people can travel half way around the world and then still end up with a Kiwi

You misunderstand. This was a permanent reunion, with roots way back.

If it helps, I had previously been having loads of sex with a Scottish bird.
