while were at it can we do something about "quantum jump" - that would be the SMALLEST change ... the ex-physics student in me just cringes

I'm sure there's an argument about poorly scripted commercial porn vs talented amateurs having fun there somewhere ....

  • Hard News: And The Mission Is?,

(pops head up off of beach to check work email) I was more thinking that what might be going on is that Key/English may be making policy with CT and the back benchers are not only feeling out of the loop and that their principles are going to be compromised when they think they have a shoo in but also that if they start talking about stuff publically the powers that be will have to accept them as gospel (but that obviously isn't working)

Are you sure that the real reason why no one in National knows what the policies are isn't simply that Crosby and Textor haven't got back and told them what they'll be yet?

(I'm actually vaguely serious here - they probably haven't figured out what will fly and what they need to give away from the party line to get elected)

I'll now retire back to my Rarotongan beach and let you argue ....

  • Hard News: Mo' Indexing,

are you suggesting my big-screen tv, high-meat diet, and flush toilet is over-consumption or greedy?

I think it's more that you actually have the big screen TV and indoor BBQ in your toilet that has us worried ...

  • Legal Beagle: Tastes like democracy,

US elections are managed locally - at the state and county level - so each county may use a different system - it's a real mish-mash. There's no real reason why they couldn't count the votes by hand - somethings are easier than in NZ as people have to vote at a particular fixed polling place - the downside though is that they vote on so much in each election - and people expect to get results on TV that night

I forgot to add one other voter suppression thing in the US - they vote on Tuesdays and polling booths are mostly open during work hours (close at 7 so there's a 2 hour rush at the end of the day) and you have to get from work to a particular polling place to vote

  • Hard News: Improving quality by cutting service,

back in the mid 70s I had a summer job working in a paper - in the last days of hot metal - it was a wonderfull place that sadly really doesn't exist anymore - at the time computers were on the horizon, everyone was nervous but they had a string union .... within 10 years everything had changed - what those subs do today used to be done by 4 people - a typesetter, reader, copy holder and sub. Now days the first 3 have been replaced by publishing software and spellcheckers - I doubt they can completely do away with someone deciding where to put stuff on the page

But perhaps they could fire the guy who writes the headlines with the really bad puns - that might be a step forwards

There's lots of other things you can put in bug wheelie bins - for example one can fit two students - it's not always such a good idea
