Sacha, that is an enlightening account from Helen. I remember her on Q and A a few weeks ago refusing to comment on what we now know was considerable progress made in resolving the issue, as the parties had agreed not to. Unfortunately, that integrity led to a major backlash against her/the CTU/ and unions in general over the following weeks.
The intial post also explains why there have been such conflicting messages coming out from the Beehive.

I think all the parties in this dispute should sit down together over a nice cup of tea and then symbolically wash each others' cups and saucers. Water is a great cleanser.
(Otherwise this increasingly nasty anti-union, sexist rhetoric in the media will get even more depressing.)

Wasn't Chris Bourke the resident National Library scholar for one of those years he was writing his book? Which would mean he would be thoroughly familiar with the various collections at the National Library, and would be well placed to advise on a way forward?
The cartoon archive at the Turnbull (in the National Library) used to be more than just a repository and hosted conferences, exhibitions and produced books. Seemed a good model until the funding was cut.

The Time Cinema in Lyall Bay is a great place. Autism Wellington's adult group has a yearly visit where they view an appropriately selected programme (going tomorrow in fact). But the movie part is almost less fascinating than the extensive memorabilia on display. I've also been there for birthday celebrations and fundraisers.

I think it is most unfair that the short, otherwise normal sized Governor General is not allowed to answer back in his own defence, to all these public insults. I am a great fan of his, having met him a couple of times and heard him speak several times; he always starts his speeches with a greeting in the three official New Zealand languages including NZ Sign Language. In 2008 he went to the United Nations with a delegation of disabled people to help collect the the International Roosevelt Disability award. Before he was GG he sat on the restorative justice based panel the 'Confidential Forum' which heard stories of abuse of patients, including disabled people, who had been incarcerated in our mental and psychopaedic institutions. That process helped so many people.
