  • Hard News: Wild is the Weekend,

Having watched some of the earlier games, I reckon it is time (if they haven't done so already) they introduced the yellow card for some Australian netballers!

  • Hard News: Wild is the Weekend,

He carried the ball six times and lost it five of them.

As a Waikato and Chiefs fan, I do have to admit that Luaki was pretty crap on Saturday. When he is good, he is very good; when he is bad, he is appalling.

But no one has mentioned Richard Kahui. who was very good. The Herald nominated him as the best in the line-up.

Maybe if they had subbed on Stephen Donald as well, the bumbling might have been fixed.

  • Hard News: Te Reo and the Resolution,

    before attempting to make sense

The joy of The Mighty Boosh is that it makes no sense at all....from Old Greg to the Helloooooooooooooo lady. But I did like the concept of the Stationary Farm.

  • Hard News: Te Reo and the Resolution,

and once you have it all working the content is dumber and duller than ever

Take a look at The Mighty Boosh or The Larry Sanders Show or Doctor Who. You might change your mind.

Or 'The Dying Channel' as it's known at our house.

Snap! Ore 'The Half-Dead Channel" as it is known i n our house. I will admit that there are occasional treasures--as in digging holes in search of remnants of Roman life (as noted above). Quite how they can re-construct an entire Roman town from a bit of muddy stone and bits of pottery, still puzzles me. Like how they construct dinosaurs (including skin colour and texture) from a bit of bone.

I did like the series about retracing the step of English travel writers of the 17th/18th century. There were gems in a sump-hole of real estate!

  • Hard News: Te Reo and the Resolution,

Has there ever been a channel so poorly named as Sky Movie Greats?

The Living Channel? My daughter and I have a game, counting the number of times 'nice' is used as a description, as some portly British couple go through the process of buying up a holiday home in some impoverished east European country.

It was great to see Maori subtitles on Shortland Street last night, even though they flashed by very quickly--another demonstration of how much dialogue there is SS.

  • Hard News: Just Some Things,

I think of Gary Brain every time the flight attendant tells us to be careful opening the overhead lockers as items may have shifted in flight :-(

Me too. I have yet to experience anything shifting (or the earth moving) but he sure was dealt a mighty blow.

In respect of drummers, does Ginger Baker from Cream qualify? Or does his 40 minute long, rather self-indulgent solos rule him out? In terms of percussion (generally), you really need to put Tom Waits at the top of the list.

The drummer with The Pretenders is pretty damn good too. When I saw them in Auckland two summers ago, the drummer was enclosed in a perspex cage. Never figured out whether it was for his protection, or for the audience!

  • Hard News: Just Some Things,

I recall reading an article in the Guardian Weekly some time back, about the failure to to capture Karadzic (especially by NATO) and the networks that had concealed him and the suggestions made about deals being struck to allow him to escape. Hadn't ever seen those shots of UN peacekeepers tied to posts as 'human shields, shown on ONE News last night. Really shocking!

If you can't have a happy birthday Russell, have a tremendously pleasant one.

  • Hard News: This whole, glorious trainwreck,

I'll blog about something sensible tomorrow ...

As long as it is not about the Sensible Sentencing Trust. Who's for setting a Senseless Sentencing Trust?

Whaleoil and Co sound like truly AWFUL people and not worth commenting on.

  • Hard News: A Taxonomy of Poo,

There was a question, some way back, about a documentary about the PYM. Can't remember the title but it was made by Russell Campbell and Alastair Barry.

As an aside--has anyone else read the piece by Nicholas Carr "Is Google making us Stoopid? What the internet is doing to our brains" (Atlantic July/August 2008). He suggests (amongst other things) that the net is making it difficult to stay focused on long pieces of writing. I am finding I am doing the same with some of these discussions--anything longer than 2 or 3 pars tends to get skipped, in favour of shorter entries. Does that make me 'stoopid'?
