Look at this recent headlines from that science ' magazine' Nature.

any problems Russell 'with the way they conduct themselves'

Is the Arctic's biggest ice sheet in irreversible meltdown? And would we know if it were? Alexandra Witze reports.

When people talk about catastrophic climate change, there's a fair chance that Greenland is on their mind. If they use the term 'tipping point', then it is pretty much a sure thing.

and the comments in the online discussion here
    http://www.nature.com/news/2008/080416/full/452798a.html

What I didn't see in the article is what happened to the Greenland ice cap in the period 1935-1950. The retraction of the breakup point of the largest glacier at Ilulisat (Jacobshavn) was much faster in that period than recently. See the NASA web site at: http://www.nasa.gov/vision/earth/lookingatearth/jakobshavn.html and specifically the long-term retreat (1850-2003):

The reason Al Gore and his little Truth number appeared in the courts is that his doco wasn’t science in the strict sense of the term. We have a similar review process for advertising here. And even Hansen has used the Press Council in NZ to get a ruling on a climate sceptics opinion that differed from his own. ( he lost)

And what about Als other exaggerations.

Well known is claim over the internet.
Also he claimed to have been 'shot at ' in Vietnam, he said that he was a ' newspaper trainee' at the NY Times and that he had a part in writing Hubert Humphreys acceptance speech at the 68 convention.

Strangely he WAS the model for a character in Erich Segals Love Storey.
And in a throwback to his internet claim, Al Gores father claimed to be the 'father of the interstate highway system'

Global Sea Ice has last month reached an an extent that has only been exceeded twice in 25 years .
jan 2008 was the second highest jan on record.

Just maybe we are getting colder not warmer

Would be great to weave in the SIS from the Muldoon era, just keeping tabs of course on those who visited Lesbos !

Funny that the SIS had offices in the the old ASB building, a rather prominent part of town at the time unless.... you want to be very handy to the old telephone exchange ( now the New Gallery) right across the road

  • Hard News: Hot Media,

What is that Hanson is "right" about.
He uses a study that claims to be a random sample, but its really only picked from 4 US print media outlets. Who tend to be the paper of record types and the Wall Street Journal , even I would think would be far from balanced.

Too boot some "random" articles date back to 1993.
    Thats like 15 years ago.

And dont forget in a statistical sense the IPCC gives it a very likely rating that increase intemperatures are caused by human emissions of greenhouse gases.

I wouldnt travel in a plane that was "very likey" to reach its destination

  • Hard News: Hot Media,

Follow up to the "balance" study some specific articles are from 1993 !!
    eg
Another front-page Los Angeles Times article (2/8/93), "An Early Warning of Warming: If the 'Greenhouse Effect' Exists, the Arctic Will Be the First to Experience It," provides another example of balance as bias.

    WTF .
So in 1993 even in the IPCC only gave a less than 60% probability Climate change was caused by humans.

  • Hard News: Hot Media,

You forget that Mann ( of Discredited Hockey Stick fame) made a complaint to the Press council about an article in NZ Herald from sceptic Professor de Freitas..

Whats good for the goose ..?

BTW the study referred to by Dave Hansford is here
    http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=1978.
The only articles looked at where the big four of US print media
NY Times, Wapo, LA Times, Wall St Journal.
So its not as random as claimed AND was 4 years ago.

  • Hard News: Campaigns,

Obama and Clinton remind me a bit about Kennedy and Johnson.
While those two didn't compete for the nomination ( up to the same stage as Clinton & Obama) they did end up as running mates.

One was the charismatic young Senator - who only had a few years of top political experience and the other was the wily tough political pro with the scars to prove it- who was a Senatorial titan.

As history turned out Johnson had an legislative record that was only exceeded by FDR. Who remembers what Kennedy achieved other than his visit to Dallas.

And whats the bet there will be a wronged woman to come forward a month before the election - why would die hard republicans register as democrats for a day in order to vote for him in the primaries unless they knew the amateur would be more easily knocked out in the title fight

But no need to think at all about any of this since Hillary is 'evil'.
And how dare she do the medias job and tell the voters what Obamas faults are.
They sure dont hold back on any of the Clintons

  • Hard News: Campaigns,

So Clinton 'clearly obviously' lied ?
Really , she says she had a lapse. meanwhile Obama lied about not hearing the inflammatory comments of Wright when asked on ABC which he later corrected without noting his earlier comments when he made his Union speech . Did he too not have a lapse?

AS for the Tusla incident in Bosnia. The reality was the Clintons were moved to the cockpit of the C17 jet ( which is amoured) and there had been reports of sniper fire in the hills surrounding the airport. This was of course in 1996 . or 12 years ago . 12 years ago for someone who has an incredibly busy public life

But this is less excusable Russell

This is what she did say ( which you truncated)

We can answer that some other time,” Clinton said at a press conference held in a working class neighborhood here. “This is about what people feel is being said about them. I went to church on Easter. I mean, so?”

Maybe she doesnt remember when last she fired a gun and doesnt .
what to say so, BUT she does remember when she went to church
    .
And your last comments about Hillary are begiining to sound a lot like the Kiwiblog mafia about Helen

  • Hard News: Intellectual Properties,

Funny that Al Gore is never rubbished by warm- mongers as NOT being an expert.
And being the inventor of the internet isnt quite what I meant.
Lets hope he got his graphs on his slides all worked out this time.

Seems like he has turned out like George Bush who was influenced by the neo cons to institute a pre emptive war.
AL and a few of his scientific mates whom he is the mouth peice for think a bit of pre emption on climate change is in order.

Notice too that we have gone from Global Warming to Climate Change and the latest version is Climate Variability.
The phrase is moving away from any sort of warming at all
