  • Hard News: Rationalisation is at hand!,

    @Tom lets hope so

Are there any punters expecting Green to get past 6% - maybe even higher if it gets too hard to vote L but want some alternative to the lack of insight or leadership from Nats?

    Thank goodness for alternative views.

I've even tried to make sense of the finance thing myself
    new paradigm needed

The best analysis has come from Robin Blackburn over at NewLeft

    subprime history and analysis

Despite all that I must say for once I agree with the experts at NZX and NZI on some practical steps that would show real leadership and help out.

Has nayone noticed that the NZX has a new blog NZX blog might be a good place to make some of these comments

  • Stories: The Internet,

The great thing with the internet is not having to physically be somewhere else for a meeting or activity. This is a major change that is helped by mobile phones and the like.

Back in the late '80's I worked in Australia and the UK and had to fly every week. The carbon bills must have been huge.

Now I get to do business almost anywhere (in a suitable timezone) and that is the major benefit of the internet.

On history / had some great times with the Iprolink crew - trust they are in the book Craig & Jim were legends even then.

  • Southerly: The Joys of Unclehood,

    Thanks David,

    I laughed more than once

Surprisingly good to hear of adventures in junior land. My daughter is now 7 and we are over almost over Maccas . Mostly she like the horrible plastic things that pass for toys.

being an Uncle is different to being a parent. You can bet your brother is looking forward to your child/ren visiting in due course.

One of my siblings recently had a child and I am so looking forward to her views changing as she finds out the reakity of being a parent as opposed to just being an Aunty.

    Thanks again

**REPLY**: Glad you enjoyed my rantings! -- Cheers, DH

  • Hard News: Shihad are like the All…,

So, it seemed, did Trevor Mallard, who was there with his partner. He smiled a little when a pungent cloud of marijuana smoke drifted his way, and tapped his foot. Literally. Right foot, tapping. I think Labour needs some more ministers who can dance …

Definitely something in the "Labour needs some more ministers who can dance" comment.

I think we all need more dancing time.

  • Southerly: Nine Months of Baby Hell,

Some people do have well behaved babies - it does happen. It does feel a bit like a competition sometimes but that is not the baby's fault.

It usually takes kids a few years to work out what kind of music will wind you up and so Bob is clearly ahead of the game with this one.

However now that you're coming to terms with country music he might have to change his tastes again just to be different.

May I suggest the Michel Gondry video collection - especially the Bjork video's.

My daughter loves those but not all of his work. There was a Stones video which got the thumbs down and some other tracks she also didn't like.

Make the most of all the time youn have because as soon as you get used to it something else will be happening

  • Hard News: Ready to Fly,

The TVNZ site makes my eyes hurt - but surely no harm in linking to

The pr intro for Media 7

(Marketing tip to TVNZ wesbite managers - how about using shorter human readable URL's - better for SEO and actual humans! - Its not that difficult to do.)

And to On Demand in the space where a link to Media7 should be?

presume the show will be available online somewhere? for those who haven't got freeview boxes sorted yet?

  • Hard News: New on the Street,

Get someone to knock up a map (one with street names on it) and make it available.

Here's an idea - have a look at the Orcon coverage map and my guess is that all the other ISP's might want to match the rollout in some of covered areas - Ponsonby, Mt Albert, Browns Bay, Ellerslie, and Glenfield.

It has some street names and a phone number check system when in doubt.

I asked Ihugafoneand the sort of answer is about 3 months before they match the Orcon service - or thats the way I read the reply.

BUt wouldn't hurt to email your own ISP and ask them when / if they are going DSL2 and then decide to change ISP's if you can't wait that long - or the answer is not suitable.

Might help them prioritise their timetables

Also as far as I can tell actual contention ratios will slow down ADSL2 the same as for "regular slow" broadband - but at least there should be a quantum leap in speed for most.

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

OK - I should have looked it up A (in ADSL) stands for asymmetric as in faster upload speeds are somewhat of problem for ADSL...

However it does seem that upload speeds of 3.5Mbit/s are possible under some types of ADSL.

  • Hard News: Geekstravaganza,

I'm a bit late on this one (my apologies). Pleased to hear that I'm in one of the areas served by Orcon's unbundled service.

Much faster downstream speeds would be great - but why is the UPSTREAM speed still limited to 1MB ? Can't actually find anywhewre on the Orcon website to ask them the question.

Moving content between high speed servers that are offshore is great but at some poiint we need to get that content onto the network first.

We are rapidly moving into a world of video and other bandwidth thirsty content everywhere.

Or am I missing something? (Besides a commercial account using fibre or UNS?)

Is 1mb upstream a limitation of ADSL, perhaps?
