  • Hard News: Swine flu, terror and Susan Boyle,

Perhaps Russell will give us an H1N1 info page. Probably only a matter of days until a PAS reader has some first hand experience to share. Fortunately, we can't catch it electronically.

  • Hard News: Swine flu, terror and Susan Boyle,

Seems it's like a quick nasty flu - high temp, aches, pains, coughs. Worse than a cold but shorter and less intense than regular flu. Easy to test for and many are taking tamiflu as soon as symptoms start. But could become a chest infection for some people, which would need antibiotics. I guess we will soon recognise it.

  • Hard News: Swine flu, terror and Susan Boyle,

Been talking to some insiders in this H1N1 thing. Some good news and bad. The good is that it seems that many people over 60 seem to have a natural immunity, possibly from some global flu-thing in the 1940s. The other good thing is that it seems quite mild at this stage for most people, although could rebound more severely later, so it might be good to get it now. The bad thing is that they estimate at least 1 in 3 people will get it, and probably within the next month or so. So within the next couple of weeks will probably be no point in attempting any quarantine.

So if you don't want to get it, go into isolation from anyone else now, although that runs the risk getting the worse version later. On the other hand there might be a vaccine by then.

The main problem is that this is on top of the regular flues etc of winter which already stretch services and resources without having a pandemic to cope with. So probably best to do some planning now about what you and your family will do to lessen impact.

  • Hard News: ffunnell Up!,

Re the Maitreya stuff, I wondered how long it would take for someone to refer to it. I was surprised to see the banner there the other day as it didn't seem to fit the XT network type ads usually advertised in that space. But, I for one, am happy to have something there for a change that is advertising an optimistic outlook for the future and, what's more, doesn't involve buying stuff.

And considering the numbers of thread pages devoted to various conspiracies on other topics (such as the sounds on a few seconds of 15 year old tape for example), promoting another untested theory doesn't seem too out of place.

  • Not Guilty,

heard something about evidence that didn't get to the jury that I still struggle to believe. But from a pretty good source ..

So have I. But I think people will be repeating variations on this theme for many years to come. As people continue to argue over many other trials.

  • Hard News: Rodney's Folly,

This attitude from neo-libs that public libraries are merely there to service the fiction-reading needs of middle aged women, was something many of us had to fight pretty fiercely in the 1990s when our local council did a similar cost cutting exercise. (Councillors also told us that computer terminals would completely replace libraries).

This same attitude has arisen in the government's drastic cutting of funds for adult education as they are merely 'hobby' courses. Trevor Mallard at Red Alert is pretty angry at this.

  • Island Life: Big Little City, Big Little…,

Voting for a choice of two right-wing personalities I fundamantally disagree with is not my idea of a fair electoral system.

That's why you need STV voting in Auckland. It's much fairer and much more empowering. You can put your least favourite candidate last. It encourages less divisive candidates to come through as everyone's second choice.

  • Not Guilty,

What about the bunch of legal people on the privy council who led to this retrial? They obviously saw some flaws in the case.

  • Not Guilty,

Islander, James McNeish is hardly an independent witness. As I understand it he was friend of Robin B's. Robin's Joe Karam in the battle of the Bain books.

Re the family support for David B. He had some supporters in the wider family. But he might not have been close to the extended family generally, as he was apparently an introverted nerdy young adult, and they were a different generation to him and lived elsewhere much of his life. And someone pointed out to me - and I don't know if this is correct - that there were financial implications of a not guilty plea on the distribution of the estate.

I agree with Sophie. Just because the David B portrayed by the intense media coverage over the last 15 years seems strange, unusual and awkward, that does not mean he was bad. That's why to me the Aspie explanation seems so plausible. With anxiety/sensory overload to explain some of the wierder aspects of his reported social behaviours.

13 years in jail is an awfully long time. It's the time for a person to go from not existing to becoming a teenager. Surely, whatever, David has earned the right for some peace and quiet in his life, and to now be able to make some choices of his own.

Re jersey culture. Q and A's moving backdrop also seems to pay homage to the famous jersey. (BTW Why do TV studio shows - including Media 7 - have to have such distracting backgrounds - what's wrong with a plain wall?)
