  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies, in reply to Idiot Savant,

Well, it makes it very difficult to bring a successful prosecution in a rape case (and its difficult enough when the victim is willing to testify, because rapists love to put their victims on trial). But given what’s been said publicly, they should be able to start with conspiracy to commit rape (7 year sentence) and move on from there.

But haven't they posted photos and videos showing the events taking place. Surely in those (and unposted videos seized via a warrant) there would be enough to convict them on a couple of charges.

  • Hard News: Narcissists and bullies,

None of this is ok, from the guys actions, to the polices in-action.

I thought statutory rape was something the police were able to prosecute without a complaint being laid?

  • Hard News: Moving right along?, in reply to David Hood,

but what kind of a country are we coming to if we are not prepared to act without thinking on the accusations of a small band of fevered hysterics.

So your saying Len Brown is lighter than wood? or is it a duck? I can never get that right.

  • Hard News: Everybody's Machiavelli,

I completely agree Russel, Bevan Chuang has been used as weapon for political means, by people who are willing to do anything to get what they want. And its a shame, because it looks from this that she is vulnerable to manipulation by people she trusts. And then after the story broke, she has been thrown under the bus.

This has likely destroyed any political future she had, and it must be very hard for her right now.

I just don't get why anyone would let whaleoil have a exclusive for this story.

I support boycotts, from the simple reason that you shouldn't be giving money to companies/countries who practices you disagree with. It is one of the few powers left to consumers, and as long as you tell the maker why you are declining to purchase their product the message can get through. As a individual you sometimes can be the tipping point to cause them to change.

But how is sending kids or young parents to jail for dealing weed making stronger whanau? When punishments cause more harm than the crime, it's time to consider other options.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Free and Legal,

Thank you for posting about this Russel, I was leaning on the not opposing the item, but have now changed to opposing it (ie keep running the service). Seems like a pretty "penny rich pound poor" idea to get rid of it to me. Primarily hurting the disadvantaged makes it a even worse idea to cut the service.

  • Hard News: MegaBox: From f**k-all to zero, in reply to Russell Brown,

When we started taking advertising, I really thought that we'd get a lot more bFM -level advertising -- ads from people who were part of the same communities as the readership -- but that has never really happened. As I said, I like the music and arts ads we carry, but it ain't a business.

Well from my position. I unblock sites where they have clear and obvious ways to do so (ie put up things like "please unblock this filter "blah.blah.blah.blah xxx blah etc" to display our ads and support us". I have been so far unable to identify anything non-generic in regards to the PA ads to unblock them.

Only the following filters are active for PA for me.

    ###ad-leaderboard
    ##.adverts
    http://partner.googleadservices.com/gampad/google_service.js
    http://secure-nz.imrworldwide.com/v60.js

None of these are specific enough for me to be happy disabling (and they all come from my filter subscription). Especially the javascript ones (which will get blocked by scriptblocker as well).

My reasons for blocking ads are less about getting stuff for free, and more about not having my computer systems compromised by virus's from compromised advertising networks (doubleclick is really bad in respect of this).

So when it's possible for me to support site operators by viewing their ads I will always do so, and in the instance of sites being pretty militant/incessant about it (arstechnica.com) I simply stop going there, which I guess is a win-win :)

So I guess my request, if its not too much hassle, is to maybe put a link up saying "please support our ads" and then supplying filter exceptions that will work, and you might find people will add them. As long as the ads stay sensible and none of the "punch the monkey" style ads appear.

  • Up Front: Whimsy Is an Extra 5 Cents a Word,

Isn't selling out more about just giving up on being objective starting to be miss-leading. Or just throwing your integrity to the wayside to do what the market/customer wants?

As long as your still objective and maintain your integrity, then its just work for pay, and not selling out :)

[edit] Just gotta say, that note 2 review there isn't really a review. Looks like a press release :) (not emma's doing though)

except that doesn't really work. The bottom 50% of Americas population only control 2.5% of the wealth. So you would need to take all of it to equal the tax take reduction of the high income tax cuts in America. That is not just take all of their income, but everything they own. Its just a mugs game.
