  • Hard News: The humanity,

Just got the Weekend Herald from the Box – front page picture is David Cunnliffe at the local beach on his cellphone – with the blurb – “Exclusive, candid images that highlight the desolation of David Cunnliffe" – To me he looks more chilled and resigned to things than anything else – cancelling my Herald Sub though – can’t abide this BS attitude, the reporting and stalking.

“Issues” don’t have to be resolved to meet News Media Deadlines – they can be worked out over a matter of days or weeks – setting things right takes time and concentrated effort.

Anyone leading Labour would have not have won the election with the current policy settings – That the Labour vote didn’t evaporate further has something with Cunnliffe being strong in the debates.

  • Hard News: The humanity,

It is not HIS fault - I felt if he had not been as good as he was in the debates the Labour vote would have collapsed even further in favour of NZ First, the Greens and the Nats. He gave it a really good crack it is the years of Labour being unsettled within themselves and the flaky policy positions that did them in.

I feel Labour have another election defeat looming before they will change - they are still married to the CGT and things like the Man Ban - that don't sit well with voters.

Cunnliffe is in essence the best they have at the moment - Grant Robertson just won't cut the mustard. IMHO - the other emerging MPs are too young lack experience - Davis, Nash.

They should let Cunnliffe lead them in rebuilding the "policy base/positions" and "party machine" and support him while he does this then at the end of the next parlimentary term review the year in opposition and where they sit with voters pole wise and then - leader decided make a move to create a shadow cabinet that actually takes the fight to the government rather than fights amongst itself.

I don't think they will do that - there is nothing quite like the cannibalism of the labour party - they eat each other whole.

I was surprised to be deprived even of the schadenfreude of National being forced to deal with Winston.

I feel your pain - it is my regret that we don't see Key attempt to swallow that rat whole, alive and kicking.

Winston moderating the Nats was the best outcome "we" could expect.

  • Hard News: Time to Vote,

I feel it was the capital gains tax - "The Majority" don't want it and the opposition Lab/Green are married to it - I don't think KDC is the reason for Labour's or the left's woes.

Key is as bent and viscous as they come - the word "Dirty" fits - "The Majority" will no doubt be uncomfortable with the result.

The left message seemed to be "Equality through Taxation" and the Nat message was "That won't work" - which the Majority considered to be true.

  • Hard News: But seriously, drug policy, in reply to Russell Brown,

“These kids already get pot – the question is whether making them outlaws helps or harms them.

I would certainly agree with him that supplying cannabis to people under 18 should be an offence.”

Engaged some casual “site” labour for three weeks – as things progressed it turned out he, 17 years, is a stoner – has been taken into custody 12 times – none of these where drug offences and where largely disorder, driving offences, and thieving – before he was 16 is proud of that and that none of this shows in his record as he was a juvie at the time – the thefts were to get stuff to sell to get money for drugs – Dude also boasted to us that he has over $7,000 in unpaid fines – took a day off to appear in court about the fines Judge told him to arrange to clear it by arranging community service and he told the judge – "I'll see what I can do."

Stoner Kid wanted me to give him a letter to the bank saying he is employed at so much a week so he can increase his overdraft and buy a car – his last car was crushed – he does not and has never held a drivers licence.

He does not want me to declare his earnings as he is on a job seekers benefit – however – I will file them. Told me his Dad was on his back to get his wages so they could score some drugs.

For Stoner Kid being 17 years old and having some extra cash is likely the life high water mark – can’t imagine it is anywhere but down for him and anyone he gets involved with. The thing that impressed me the most was his sense of entitlement and really high self esteem – he overreached and started telling us what to do in week three – anyone he got in car with he criticized the driving – he is a classic stoner.

Can’t see whether cannabis was legal or illegal would make any difference for this type of stoner kid – whose first drug supplier would have been his parents.
