  • Hard News: The cane and the strap,

    Don - I still think that a little unfair to FF. He's complaining about the lack of discipline and responsibility in schools,__and in the same paragraph__ gives the evidence of this lack of discipline as the (at least arguably) low proportion of students stood down for assaults on teachers.

  • Hard News: The cane and the strap,

    Thanks for the link 3410 - though Russell appears to have been me to the reply with the scoop link.

    I'd have said FF were actually less strident than the Herald made out:

    The removal of corporal punishment in schools has been highlighted as a root cause of the rise in violence against teachers.

    Is much stronger than the media release.

    "All of these young people have entered a system of education and society where discipline and responsibility are being replaced by the politically correct nonsense of childrens’ rights,” says Mr McCoskrie. “Less than a fifth of students were stood down following an assault on a teacher – that is unacceptable.”

    “It is significant that as schools have removed corporal punishment, schools have become more dangerous. School yard bullying by pupils on other pupils and staff is now the new form of ‘corporal punishment’ in schools.”

    Family First may be nutty, but they never came close (in this release anyway) to calling the removal of corporal punishment the "root cause" of anything.

    Indeed. their most stringent criticism of the lack of discipline in schools relates to their observation that less than 20% of students who assaulted teachers were stood down (which may actually be a fair complaint).

  • Hard News: Copyright Amendment Bill latest,

    I was really hoping they'd remove that contracting out provision

    It may not be too bad. They'll have the right to agree with you something else, but they'll have to be pretty clear or face the wrath of the consumer guarantees act.

  • Hard News: Brimful on the 45,

    Why would a takeaway chicken franchise send me a telegram?

    Well, I suppose you could owe them a lot of money ... telegrams are basically a debt-collection tool for NZ Post now :-)

  • Radiation: Ghosts of television past,

    Friends In England can testify that The Adventure of English is a really good documentary series

    You don't need Friends in England to tell you that about this one - Friends who closely read the TV guide should be good enough - this aired on TV 1 in 2005 (at the 'useful' time of 10am Sunday). It is good, and I also recommend the documentary currently featuring in that slot Time.

    I don't know why TVNZ does it, but 10am Sunday has seen a wealth of literate documentaries in the last couple of years. Occasionally 3pm Sunday on TV3 too (the now finished Space Race, the best of late).

    As for TVNZ6, I asked the question in Monitor without a bite, but there seem some interesting choices: the two season 1972-74 Hanna-Barbera creation__Wait Till Your Father Gets Home__ stands out as somewhat of an oddity. Any word on The Governor or something like Pukemanu?

  • New Freeview Channels,

    So - we're starting to see the shape of TVNZ 6:

    * From the Herald

    * And from the advertisements:

    Showcase

    Family

    And Kidzone

    So, gonna watch? To what (if anything) are are you looking forward?

    And Wait Till Your Father Gets Home? Showcase? Seriously? Did that even air in New Zealand?

  • Hard News: Death Spiral!,

    Double ouch. Still, this is form for New Zealand First. As Holden Republic and others pointed out last year, Barbara Stewart's failed bill to reduce the number of MPs in Parliament didn't make much sense either.

    It made perfect sense. It was suitably drafted. If reduction in the number of MPs is sought, then reducing the number of list MPs is a perfectly valid way of going about it - particularly if you don't like MMP, and prefer giving the electorate the opportunity to vote out people.

    It was just a bad idea.

    This potentially encompasses a good idea. It's just poorly executed.

  • Hard News: No Bills,

    I believe I am the first blogger to capture and re-use video from the Parliamentary webcast

    Will you also be the first to record your own satirical voiceover to such video?

    =)
