  • Hard News: Gay, but really not happy,

I used to enjoy the original Queer Nation, but got real bored real quick with the two follow up shows - both dumber than the previous one. I mean, lesbian puppets? FFS! My guess is that each time a series was commisioned the white PC hetero males at TVNZ who commissioned it were then brow beaten by others claiming the show was a joke and they should be given the chance to make NZ's definitive gay show.

Anyway, since no-one has pointed it out already .... does TVNZ feel at all STUPID for not screening the L Word earlier? It was a great show but relegated to 11.30pm on a Monday night on TV2 cos, y'now, it was about [lesbians]. Can't have that screening any time reasonable, can we?

At least not until Prime came along and showed some ... er ... balls. Going great guns on Prime I gather, I'm looking forward to tuning in when they screen the new series (currently repeating the TV2 series').

  • So that's what Craig Parker's been doing…,

er .. um ... uh ... I'm now seeing tags that say "Fenom" ... I will take a closer look tomorrow before anyone disparages those fine folk at Sony ... [ in ref to my above post]

PS Rabo is good - 7.5% on freaking call! No other bank can match that! Thanks Mr Bollard!

    Hey Russell!

This is off topic but ... have you noticed the tag 'Venom' that's been popping up all around town this month? (Check out the Westpac billboard on corner of Ponsonby & K'Rd if you need a pic) Any chance Sony Pictures are going to fess up and admit they're responsible? (Yeah, right - it took years before WEA REcords admitted they were responsible for all the "The Cure" graffitti that popped up mid80s, just prior to The Cure's album release). (Did they copy off Rus Le Roq or vice versa?)

So why are Sony a suspect for this latest tag? Spiderman 3 opens in May and the bad guy is Venom (which is actually Spideys new suit, which is actually not a new suit but a living organism, blah blah bleech). This will not be the first time a big company has used 'street level' marketing to 'reach the kids'. Ratepayers must be thrilled.

PS - lemme know a better place to post these types of tips ... I'm sure you'd prefer to weed out the crap ones first ...

  • Hard News: Introducing GodTube,

"...there are many who see it as the voice of reason. I had that conversation with a Canadian guy, US based, in the weekend who insisted they were the only network giving balance..."

As in 'Fair & Balanced?'. I'm not surprised, Fox News pump that slogan (Fair&Balanced) every 5 minutes. It's a standard marketing trick that advertisers know well; pump the message ad infinitum thru a high frequency campaign and the viewers will imbed it in their memory. So when you ask a kid which candy bar 'really satisfies' they can't help but reply 'Snickers'. And the kid believes it as if they'd thought it themselves. Ditto for Fox News viewers who really believe they're keeping themselves up with the play and hearing both sides. Ha!

More insidious is the way Fox News 'kill' their chosen political 'enemies' through death-by-a-thousand-cuts. Check out how they deal to democrat Barrack Obama:

    [apologies for going off topic]

  • Hard News: Only rock 'n' roll,

    "From the Wikipedia entry:
The World Music Awards (founded in 1989) is an international awards show that annually honors recording artists based on their popularity, and worldwide sales figures
So that pretty much explains it. Lowest common denominator."

Nah! The WMA's were first held in Monaco as a tourist/convention builder. The key statement is "based on their popularity, and worldwide sales figures" ie we decide who gets them based on deals we've done with the Recording Industry Conglomerates.

It's a crock. One artist might sell more records than another artist, but they miss out cos the other artist is deemed 'more popular'. All appearances on these shows/awards are determined by who their agent/record company is ...

  • Flying Nun Moments,

Er ... okay ... I know this thread is dead but ...

I remember seeing Toy Love perform at Sweetwaters and being enthralled/horrified by Chris Knox's onstage antics. He had a can of pineapple rings and he would slowly dip his hand in and pull one out and eat it - but his hand had been cut on the tin and was DRIPPING WITH BLOOD!! And he kept doing this until the tin was finished. Oh the humanity - there was so much blood!

About a decade later I had an epiphany. It wasn't a tin of pineapple it was a tin of beetroot; and it wasn't blood it was just beetroot juice.

That's what you get when you're young, stoned, and stupid - and don't stand close enough to the front ...

  • Stories: Best Party Ever,

I was at a dance party at Squid (in Auckland, last century), called The Island of E. There had been a problem with the lighting ... namely they had no power to their lights. So the top bar was lit with a few tealights and one solitary pin spot aimed at a mirror ball that wasn't moving -- so all you had was shafts of light but absolutely no movement. For some reason no-one seemed to mind, the music was pumping, and the party went til sun up.
