I agree with you Richard but the commercial reality is that most people simply don't care that much. If it sound ok-ish...its fine. Sad but true...30 years ago people used to play their LPs on those stacker things quite happily.

    This is rather interesting too....

On Tuesday, Universal Music Group's Doug Morris told the Reuters Media Summit "it would be a nice idea" to seek an concession from Apple like it did from Microsoft and its Zune. "We have a negotiation coming up not too far. I don't see why we wouldn't do that... but maybe not in the same way."

Not exactly fighting words from Mr. Morris. Compare that statement to his tongue lashing at YouTube and MySpace In September: "We believe these new businesses are copyright infringers and owe us tens of millions of dollars."

and as an interesting aside. I would imagine the addition of The Beatles catalogue to iTunes (something that was inevitable after the last court case) is probably taking more time at Apple HQ than iTunes NZ. Based on what I know about it (which is not much to be honest) I would imagine that Apple see it as a loss leader, a flagship act on which they make little. EMI regard the Love album as such...no money but simply market share.

It need to be said that at a time when Warners are releasing a mighty Flying Nun (tm) box set, that Mikee at Loop is Roger's natural heir. He is doing more for NZ muisc right now than virtually anyone. I might not like everything he releases but more power to him.

well Apple need to do something..in Asia (a mere 3 billion odd people) Sony Erriccson's Walkman phones, if visual evidence is anything to go on, seem to be doing the business, and taking it from both Apple (who outside Japan have always been a smaller player than they are in the US market) and Creative.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

It got a bloody four star review in Mojo too! Quite odd. Yes, its terrible, I agree. The only old buggers make new album I want to hear is the new Roxy produced by Eno rumoured for 2007

I'm hanging out for one, otherwise I'm having to do the parallel import/trade me thing to get a decent sony w710i walkman phone as vodafone NZ doesn't believe in customer choice.

that's one of the things that hit me back in NZ last month, the lack of choice offered by both telecom and Vodafone...and the prices! I use a Sony E k750i which I bought in Jakarta plan free about a year ago for $300 and the K800i which has replaced it is about $380 compared to some $800 in NZ plan free, or $750 at the parallel imports website. The same with the newish Canon EOS400D which is $1500 parallel and some $1000 in the shop here (including tax)...somebody is doing well out of this

And I don't believe we are being cheapskates when we say this. If I knew that the artist was getting a larger cut I wouldn't be whining...

the major record companies on the contrary are often using the digital move as a way of reducing the amount paid to an artist. For example most acts signed to majors have a "new technologies" deduction..which they actually used to try to apply to CDs until a couple (as recall Dire Straits and Simply Red) of acts sued. this can vary between 10% (unusual) to 30%. Which means that the act only get paid on 70% of the wholesale. Then there are packaging deductions which majors apply...20-25%..so the royalty base is now down toabout 45% of wholesale..and there are more. The fact that there is no packaging on a digital download is ignored.

A bunch of Sony acts are suing the company over this creative accounting.

It all makes it very hard to feel sorry for the record companies. As they cry poor.
