  • Hard News: Awesome,

Compie, Yamis..I'm with you on The Who. Live at Leeds still stands for me as one of the greatest albums ever, live or otherwise. Not sure about the new album though....

  • Island Life: I have aspirations going,

Now we know Mr Key and friends will be promoting lower taxes, but Labour/UF are clearly positioning themselves to do the same (unless Cullen really wants to ensure that Labour loses next time by continuing in his moronic ways).

just as an aside, a composer / producer friend of mine has been contracted by an agency to do a soundbed for next year for a tax related TV campaign. He knows more but won't or can't say.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

The Stones didn't used to be self parody. Witness the movie "Ladies and Gentleman The RS" from 1971. I saw them at Western Springs in 73(!!) and they were incredible. Although I didn't see them on their last tour (not in the country and probaly wouldn't want to to be honest) by the time I saw them in the eighties I couldn't help feeling that they were in full, rather cynical, only in it for the money mode.

That said, their last album was ok, although it was no Let it Bleed, despite the critics frothing.

  • Hard News: Something up with Apple?,

I know U2 have an iPod tie in but I would doubt that their contract, negotiated by a third party on their behalf, includes them doing a iTunes launch in NZ. I would imagine that's the last thing on their mind frankly.

I can just imagine McGuiness trying to sell them on that on on the plane here.

I may be wrong but Dec 3 still stands as the most likely date, as Russell said elsewhere

  • Hard News: Awesome,

Hi Dubber, I remember that story of yours from back in the day, it was the stuff of legend, and rightly so. Whilst I'm not a fan as such (I'm with Russell..they have one or two great songs but, hey, they ain't The Clash ;)) I was mightily impressed.

I was lucky in that I got to spend the 1989 gig backstage (through a variety of connections and met and hung out with BB King (and the hookers he was playing poker with)) and then stood on the side stage as U2 played. That I was allowed to surprised me, but there seemed to be no problem as long as I kept out of the way...it was a huge stage. As I said, not a fan, and I've stood side stage on more than a few occasions with other acts, but the electricity and tension between the four of them was incredible and I think it was that cohesiveness, and the unity of the fact that each one of them is on that stage as a 1/4 of the whole, that gave them the power. Like, I said, not a fan, but I still rate them as one of the great rock'n'roll bands of all time.

The Edge presented Joel Haines with a signed guitar...Joel ran off and got BB King to sign it, which he did. Quite a score for an 18 year old guitarist.

They hired out my club in 93 for their party, via my buddy Doug Hood, who was the promoter. Bono then told Paul Oakenfold he had to play a public gig in the Box (which he did for $250, and told Urb magazine later it was the highlight of the world tour). Cause Celebre was private, with fairly tough security from their own ex-SAS guy. It was very hard to get in and only with the OK of the band, Paul McGuiness, Doug Hood or myself (we were asked to provide an invite list and had to explain to McGuniness who each one was) and there was quite a stream of "celebs" turned away. I was amused when the MD of PolyGram, their record company turned up with entourage and The Edge told the security to tell him to get lost. They were giggling about it like schoolkids....

Of course, the fact that Big Audio Dynamite's Mick Jones was wandering around the club meant as much to me...a member of The Clash on our dancefloor was about as cool as it got....a friend of mine over from London was beside himself.

I'll make it official by invoking Godwin's Law. Hitler was kind to animals

  • What Happens: The Sequel!,

    James,
I wasn't disputing the contents of the WT story on Lebanon, rather the site itself (witness the "Daily Express" and "Daily Mail" sources for the hilarious BBC story..what's next, The National Enquirer??) but my comments on the ranting applied to what you surrounded these with. "While no one was injured the attack was seen as a warning to Teheran that Iran's opposition was going for the jugular"...and they will greet you with flowers as the 82nd rolls in...god we've lived through these half baked fantasies before and look what happened.

The The BBC has had its problems over the years but it's credibility as a news organistaion dwarfs most of the other major names on the planet. I know that its pro-rigor on the hard US right to dismiss it as "anti-American", but its not a credible accusation really when stacked against the likes of Fox or even CNN.

    James,
you are ranting now. You've produced loony link after loony link. And now the world tribune...not the most reliable balanced source ..and yet after all those we are told the BBC is garbage. Oh dear, I discussed, tried to take you seriously but I can't anymore.

As I said, this discussion has ground to a halt.

Now this is getting silly. Asia Times is an odd site...with the odd good piece it also flails wildly both left and right and this thing by the anonymous "Spengler" is bizarre flailing non journalism of the worst kind..bereft of any facts it makes statements like "The French sold their women to the German occupiers in 1940, and the Germans and Japanese sold their women to the Americans after World War II."

What? No some women sold themselves as prostitutes, it was not state policy.

and then we have "A corollary to this universal law states that the battered Iranian whore is the alter ego of the swaggering Iranian jihadi"...for gods sake, no reasonable person should keep on reading, but I did...and it's a litany of half baked convoluted twaddle that should never have seen the light of day. The Iranian birth rate is the regarded as a
huge success story for gods sake.

Who is this idiot and how did he get published?

As I said James, this is getting really silly, in your attempts to paint Iran as a nation in collapse, against all available reputable evidence, this half baked piece does you no favours at all

I get the feeling this conversation has ground to its inevitable end.

  • Camilla Speaks!,

You no longer need an onward ticket to get into Indonesia simply the funds to buy one. And the immigration at Ngarrah Rai Airport have, for the past couple of years been largely unbribeable..I know people that have tried. There has been an ongoing crackdown there for quite some time and they are all filmed all the time. I doubt if $5 would work either. I suspect either the guy was so surprised he didn't know what to do, or it was about the right amount to cover the Visa-on-Demand...
